Nhlapo To Carry Flag At Closing Ceremony
BMX rider and Olympic finalist Sifiso Nhlapo will lead Team South Africa into the Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium for the closing Ceremony of the 29th Olympiad.
20-year old Nhlapo, was one of South Africa's leading performers ranking fourth in the BMX competition to secure his place in the final where he crashed on the second bend, taking down the Australian rider.
Although not seriously injured, it was a devastating blow to the young rider, and this honour will go someway to recognise his commitment and effort in the final.
"Excited, this is very prestigeous. I'm very honored - I came here to achieve a goal and although I am disappointed with the outcome in the competition - it's great to be recognised in this way," said Nhlapo when told he would carry the flag.
The closing ceremony culminates with the extinguishing of the flame and lowering of the Olympic flag. Once lowered, the flag will be handed over to London for the 30th Olympiad in 2012.
Team South Africa arrive home on Tuesday morning, having earned one silver medal from the games through long jumper Khotso Mokeona.
