Tour of Spain: Gilbert Wins Stage 3

Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert won the third stage of the Tour of Spain on Monday, a 157.3 kilometres ride from Marbella to here and took the overall leader's red jersey.

The 28-year-old - a two-time winner of the prestigious Paris-Tours race - broke clear in the final kilometres and came home 14 seconds ahead of Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez.

"The target was to win the stage so getting the overall leader's jersey is a bonus," said Gilbert, who won the Amstel Gold Classic earlier this season.

Highlights from Stage 3:

Previous overall leader British rider Mark Cavendish suffered in the hot conditions on a stage which included a first category climb and along with Luxembourg star Andy Schleck was left trailing by the peloton.
