DROOL! In July the cycling world was held captive by the incredible journey of MTN-Qhubeka, who enjoyed a dream Tour de France: Eritrean Daniel Teklehaimanot wore the polka-dot climber’s jersey for four days, and Briton Steve Cummings famously won stage 14 on Mandela Day.
Days before the tour, MTN-Qhubeka’s bike sponsor Cervélo proudly unveiled three exquisitely painted team bikes: the aero S5, super-light R5, and the P5 TT bike.
Glistening chrome was complemented by yellow gradients, designed to evoke the heat cutting through an African sunrise. On the top tubes, the English translations of ‘Qhubeka’ – ‘Move Forward’ on the S5, ‘Carry On’ on the R5, and ‘Progress’ on the P5 – were added to inspire riders when the going got tough. The five colours found in the South African flag run the length of the downtube, rounding off this unique design: the perfect celebration of an African dream come true.
In light of the African team’s unprecedented success at the Tour, Cervélo announced they would release a super-limited- edition S5 ‘Team Edition’. Due to ferocious demand worldwide, local agents Two Wheels Trading were only able to secure one solitary bike, which was snapped up faster than André ‘The Gorilla’ Greipel sprinting down the Champs Élysées in July to win the final stage.
With Dimension Data taking the reins from MTN as title sponsor in 2016, as well as the likes of Mark Cavendish joining the squad, we are eagerly awaiting the artwork for the 2016 team bike.
