Are you a 29er convert? Check out our biggest shootout yet of 10 of these big wheelers each under the R20,000 mark.
- By Neil Gardiner
We were ready to stick our necks out on this test. When we decided to do a 10-bike shootout of the popular 29er format in the 20K bracket, we thought we would be able to pick a clear winner. After all, hardtails are usually for racing, so it would be easy – just pick the fastest one. We never imagined how different they’d all be and how many new categories would open up, making us rate them according to a whole new scale of factors.
Each of our testers were given a detailed rating sheet, a pen and a couple laps to test each bike. The bikes were reviewed according to features, ride feel, x-factor and value. The bikes are listed in alphabetical order, in case we mislead you into believing that one is better than the other.

Niner? Trek?
Hi
Thanks for the reviews, but what if you are looking for a 29er for under R10 000? Is there any in that price bracket?
Donovan, there is the Momsen sl329 and the GT Karakoram and a few others too.
That would be the Momsen AL329…the SL is the carbon frames (729 and 929)
Any reviews / opinions on the Axis 10 29er FS?
Hi. I’m a beginner at cycling. I need help deciding between a Momsem AL329 (reviewed on your website) and a Silverback VIDA2. My criteria are:
comfort
speed
durability
handling
a Scott Team?????? You are comparing 11k with 16 to 19k. I dont get it!
