Cold Weather Layering Done Right

Riding in the cold is more fun than it sounds – once you find the RIGHT clothing combination. Here’s a guide to get you started. - By Brian Fiske

18˚ to 21˚

Start with Base layer; short-sleeve jersey; shorts; short-finger gloves; socks

16˚ to 18˚

Add Arm warmers; Full-finger gloves

13˚ to 16˚

Swop in Knee warmers; Thicker socks

10˚ to 13˚

Swop in Leg warmers; Add A vest

7˚ to 10˚

Swop in Thicker gloves; A long-sleeve jersey Add Toe covers; A sock layer; Ear covers (if you prize comfort over style)

4˚ to 7˚

Swop in Tights; Long-sleeve base layer; A thin hat (you may need to loosen your helmet)
Bring rain gear if it’s drizzling, 5 degrees and drizzle will chill you faster than -10 degrees and snow.

2˚ to 4˚

Swop in Shoe covers or winter shoes; Thick hat or balaclava

-1˚ to 2˚

Swap in Heavier tights; Mittens

-4˚ to -1˚

Add A second long-sleeve jersey; A midlayer sock

-4˚and below

Add Base-layer shorts and/or knee warmers under tights. Wrap your feet in plastic bags before putting on your shoes; drop hand warmers into mittens.
