The latest bike computers tell you everything. There’s even one that reminds you to take a drink – really.
By Neil Gardiner
To many, biking data is indispensable – in training it helps riders use their time optimally; in racing it enables accurate pacing and provides useful information to prepare for the next event. While it’s easy to get caught up in the seductive gadgetry of it all, be sure your purchase is a wise one. Be honest about what kind of training you’ll do, and don’t overspend. It’s pointless getting a power meter if you’re planning on riding the Argus on a bike that sits in the shed for the rest of the year. If you’re starting fresh, maybe get a basic model, use it for a while and then decide if you need more information.

Polar CS500
Ever since we saw Miguel Indurain wearing one while hammering home his domination of long Tour de France time trials, Polar has been the leader in heart rate training tools. The CS500 is a cycling-specific model featuring a rocker switch to toggle data fields and has the distinct advantag eof a large display–perfect for those days when the red mist comes down as your heart rate approaches 200bpm. The download function is web-based, making it Mac compatible, and the Training Load feature tells at a glance how hard your training session was and if you’ve recovered enough for the next session.
