Impey’s main man, Matt Goss, went down hard in the Stage-9 crash yesterday. He talks us through the crash and how he managed to pull off an impressive 10th.

We knew yesterday would be a good day for us and with the small climb near the end the stage suited us well. We had a great race from the start till the last 300m. I was leading Gossy out and went into the last bend really “hot” but I managed to stay upright somehow. I looked over and saw Gossy down, so I hesitated as you would if you saw your main man down. Once a few guys started I got on their wheels but I had lost all my speed to try save the day for us. Anyway it’s how it goes, it’s a real pity Pozzatto crashed into Gossy but that’s bike racing. We’ll aim for stage 11 now. At least Gossy is good and no problems so we’re good to go.
The hillier days are all about conserving energy for a couple of us to give our best efforts on the sprinting days. I know we can still win another stage or two. We’ve got the speed and our train is getting dialed in.
Today has a really hard finish so I am not expecting much from myself, more to try take an easier day for Wednesday.
The days at the Giro are pretty hectic, we’ve always got transfers after racing, eating late at night and fitting in our rubs. It’s actually all just routine now, I don’t even notice it anymore. It feels like life is in fast forward all the time. What do we do to unwind? Well most guys watch some movies or just read a book but generally we’re all just going with the flow taking the race day by day. Race fatigue is definitely starting to set into the peloton, all of us are getting tired and looking forward to the rest day in a couple days.
