I did the race yesterday and enjoyed it in the thunder, rain and wind! The old Warmbath’s road portion was dangerous when returning to Carousel. It was very busy and a cyclist was knocked over right in front of me by a lorry with another cyclist going down as well. I was lucky not to go down with them! The driver of the vehicle did not even bother to stop. Something else, why wasn’t there any water points yesterday? On a positive note, the marshals were great and the boerewors rolls delicious after the race.

If it wasn’t Championchip robbing our money by letting us pay for their bank fees, our seedings were a complete mess! No waterpoints, bad timing. All together, one of my worse races and its not because of the rain. Not doing another championchip race again

Poor water points, disappointed that a vehicle was pacing a cyclist who held up the traffic near the end of the race which caused me to slow down because there was no space on the road for the car and my bike. Coming thru at the end when marshals held up a car, I had to go thru a hole and puddle on the other side of the cones. Marshalling could hv bn better.

Race started late than scheduled. The first few km of the route was terribly bumpy with lots of small potholes, made even more difficult with the rain filling every indent on the tar so you could not see what was a shallow or deep hole.

An expensive race considering no giveaways, and not a SINGLE watering point on the 70km route (I do not consider a table at the halfway mark with a 20 litre container and some plastic cups a watering point-it looked like a hastily arranged last minute thing). The organisers can be thankful it was not a hot day.

It was also not a good idea to have the route to the finish over the last 200m cross over several speed strips.

I wont be back. I can get a better 70km ride in closer to home for free.

The first few km going out and returning to the finish is pothole ridden. Combined with more speed strips than I have ever seen in a road race my bike took a pounding. Suffered two punctures and there seemed to be a high % of other cyclist fixing punctures as well.

I won’t be doing this 70km race again.

The 2014 race will be the 15th running of the Sungardens Carousel race. The road has been re-tared on the R101 old Warmbath road. There are water-points at the turnaround points. The cyclists that complains about no water-point, did not complete the distance. Unfortunately we cannot close the roads for vehicles, unless a sponsor can come up with R 2 Mil to pay for road closure. The race is a charity event, all proceeds go to Hospice. We would like to have as many cyclists there as possible.

Because of complaints and moans like above, there are very few clubs still willing to present races. We seldom get compliments for the effort, but get knocked at each opportunity by a few cyclists.

If you are serious about keeping the sport of cycling alive, you need to support races.
