ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The Kluitjieskraal MTB route, as used in the Cape Epic 2010 & 2011, in between Worcester and Ceres, is renowned for its spectacular scenery and challenging uphills – some of which climb to 400m above sea level, followed by rocky, technical descents on narrow jeep tracks/single-track. It takes the rider into unknown forest and mountain territory. It is a water-rich route, which passes through the MTO forestry reserve and traverses the Waterval Mountains twice. Be prepared for some water crossings – you could get your feet wet! The 64 km route is challenging and includes steep climbs and sharp ascents and single-track. The 44 km is “pretty” but tough, while the 22 km is a family-friendly ride, with a steep hill at the beginning and wonderful views over the valley. The 5 km is a kiddies’ fun ride, ages 4 to 8 and 9 -13 years, through the farms adjacent to the school grounds. The 5km is an untimed event.

I attemted the 44km and found it tough! Luckily it did not rain although the weather was threatening (very cloudy and very cold. I was not dressed appropiately. My knees turned blue after crossing the mountain and cycling nw ward into the wind. I am still a novice. This was my second race after the recent Imvelo (35km) in Swaziland on 9/6/2012. I found the very stony/rocky portions very challenging (I suppose I had to stood up from saddle more). I rode a Scott 29″ bike which I got from my son in Jan. this year. I am 67years old. I finished in c.2:38:00.

we drove through to wolseley from a drenched wellington only to find the weather perfect…I had legwarmers on which I have found to be the best invention ever…and a rain jacket..not once on the 65km ride did I get cold, even after going through the numerous water crossings-2 off which left me pedalling with my knees under water…the surprise of the day was on top of the climb where the head-on wind was murderous…I rode up the climb at a faster speed than up top on the flat riding into the wind…my hands did get cold at the top water point-I declined the offering of sherry and baked stuff from the tannies,( I avoid sweet stuff ) however the waterpoints are always well stocked with goodies…The downhill was good fun with the rolling hills on the way to the finish being quite tiring, including the last climbs…Wolseley is one of mine and my wifes top rides in the year…the prize giving is also well planned with lekker lucky draw hampers…the catering is also good at the finish…
I think the ride is perfect as it is…
I ride the best-a carbon pro specialized stumpjumper hardtail 29′…
i am 40 years old with average fitness…

This was my 2nd mtb event & my 1st 63km race. I was on my new AL529er racing type Momsen. I really enjoyed the track, the climbs were tough, but doable. Weather was perfect for the duration of the race. Enjoyed the downhills very much. 3 Deep water crossings made it interesting, albeit the icey wet feet posed some discomfort. Finishing time was 4hrs on the minute. Wish I could see the results somewhere..
I think the race is perfect as it is. I am 43 years old.
