I enjoyed it this year but found my experience totally different from last year. This year I had a better seeding and left before 7am. While from a racing point of view it was awesome, I did miss the support along the road that those who start later receive. There was less atmosphere.
I also don’t think that Joburgers embrace the race like residents in the Cape embrace the Argus. Many of my friends on Twitter and FB moaned about the road closures etc, but none of them have ever thought of supporting or riding for fun. Rather than view it as an opportunity to showcase Joburg to the international cycling community, they see it as this massive inconvenience.
Race well organised but parking facilities bad ( had to travel approx 5kmto start) and distance markers sadly lacking for such a big race !
I have to agree on the distance from parking to race start. Even worse was the distance to car AFTER race when you are pretty tired! no signs to tell you where to go either. I would also suggest shade cloth over the starting pens – if you have to be in those pens for an hour or more you are already pretty hot and sweaty before you start the race. I am sure some shading comapny would love to sponsor that.
Rode race for the second time, all went fairly well until halfway through the krugersdorp highway when the midday heat really drained ones reserves, no matter how much liquid one drank or squeezed over themselves nothing really helped. It was unforetunate that it was so very hot yesterday for I am sure, many others including myself would have done far better times. At least I managed to knock off an hour off last years 5h 40min.
Congratulations to all the 94.7 cycle challenge finishers, especially those who had to contend with over 35 degree temperatures on the final stretch.
I’m a 1st time rookie so maybe I’m just a little ignorant ;-)
I don’t know why so much issue is made from parking to start since we pretty much have to wait for an hour or two to start once we get to the pens. If one starts earlier one will find parking closer. So a 5km warmup is probably just what one needs anyway. As for after the race if one cannot make the trip back to where you parked walking or on ones bike maybe one also isn’t fit enough to drive and one should take a longer rest at the venue anyway. As for signage, there were maps in the racepack and if you got lost within 10km of the venue just follow the other cars with bikes on the back. I heard some questions and comments that if people who had their numbers and therefore their racepacks and had bothered to read the final instructions would have known the answers at least a (half) day before getting there.
However distance markers would have been nice, shade cloth over the pens would be a huge endeavour but nice idea.
As one of those who had the experience of being boxed in some years ago (before I was a cyclist) and had to take a very long detour 15km to get to the shop that was only 2km away normally, and was pretty irate, looking back, I’d have been far better off getting to the side of the road and being encouraged to get off my butt and do some exercise earlier in my life than when I did.
It’s a huge race with lot’s of people, the logistics is a nightmare, have some patience and be glad you’re not one of those stressing out trying to do a job as excellently as the one that was done.
Thank you organisers – no event is perfect but you’re close.
My first ever 94.7. Being a big bloke, I found the hills extremely intimidating. Especially the so-called Heartbreak Hill close to the finish. I have never ridden such hills before. Overall a very nice, very well organized event! I enjoyed it a lot. I will defenately consider the 800km drive up to the event next year. Thanx to all the organizers and every participant who made this event such a huge success!!
This was also my first 94.7, I enjoyed the race and learned a lot about, eating dringking and pacing, I will be back to try and beat my shameless time of 5:13.
Hat off to the organizers and sponsors like powerade.
Very hot, well organised except finish area and last 600m bit of a shambles
Very hot, best organised event in Gauteng and will be back every year. Make sure to get your seedings up before the 94.7. If you start at 9h30 you will have a hell of a hot day towards the N14 at midday.
