Great vid! Very cool editing… Inspiring me to start commuting. Pity we don’t have a cycle path like that in JHB.
Incredible!!
I wish all your videos looked like that! Very cool and very entertaining.
Who is the babe on the bus?
I’m taking the bus, can meet people, communicate without getting metro on your case, read a book etc. and it’s not half as sweaty as cycling!
Al het ons fietsbane in JNB gehad sal die taxis en moterfiets ryers dit gebruik en ons afdruk en om ry.
Aside from crossing a pedestrian light while the red man is on (1min, 13sec), this is cool!
Very cool..

If you want to see the scenery try the link above for some photos that I took on Monday morning. I have using the path almost every day since it opened and it must be the most beautiful commuter path in a major city.

I ride to work at least twice a week, and it is the fastest for me. That guy is riding very fast and is way fit….at least compared to me.

I tried it once with a mate from Table View in an attempt to get fitter and greener. About 5 klm from town I slipped up and hit the front brake to hard (been the novice that I am), went head over hills at 20 kmh and fractured my wrist and elbow. Still I got back on as one does and made it to town in just over an hour. I cant wait to heal proper and cycle to work again.
12 km Somerset West to Techno Park, Stellenbosch:
Car: 30 min
Bike: 24 min
South Easter in the afternoon back is a pain though… (36 min to 40min)
My fastest commuting time from the center of the CBD to Blouberg was 29 minutes and 50 seconds on a MTB. A strong SE really helped.
There was a taxi before the bus arrived,,, and that would’ve only taken 12 minutes to get to town.
So it would be pretty cool to contact the people that MTB commute from Southern Suburbs. Not into town, but I have a bunch of trail rides put together from Kenilworth to UCT. Can chose from 10km include Liesbeeck river crossing to a 23km using cork tree trail.
I have met people commute all the way into town via deer park.
If I got is right:
Car took 1:05:24,
bus took 1:09:13. and
bike took 0:47:38
OK, some of us can’t pedal as fast as Neill (23 km in 47:38 = almost 29 km/h). Could be tough. So lets look at an average JOE SOAP … me.
I have a small expansion joint just north of my hips and as a boxer would go into the ring at 71 kgs / 1.74m.Doing about 120-170 km/week currently for the 94.7 km next weekend.
However I’m almost 60 and my average over the last 7 months on my MTB (my diary reflects over 2523 kms since June 1 this year) over all terrain, has been 21.7 km/h. My average for 2010 was 20.22 km/h over 3225 kms.
So check the bus = 69:13 equates to 19.9 km/h and by car 65:24 is 21.1 km/h.
I reckon it’s definately do-able for Mr Average. HOWEVER, the ride home could be tough = 46 kms a day. But what a way to start – ride to work one day get a lift home and next day / later in the week a lift to work and ride home. I used a similar pattern 30 years ago – ran from Durban to Umbogintwini in the morning (32 km) and then took a train / got a lift that night. Two days later reversed the route.
It’s all about willpower and determination. Go for it guys!
I commute most days on my MTB from Blouberg beachfront to cnr Strand and Adderley. Average time door to door is 43 minutes, varying 10 minutes either way depending on the wind. I find that if I ride / race over the weekend that I can only ride for eight or nine days on the trot before I need a days rest even if I have a very leasurely ride in and out. It is the greatest way to stay fit and strong and everyday brings a new adventure.
Hey Neil great stuff man. i did that from hout bay.
if i take the route from plumstead to town straight i beat my wife to work by 15 min so i take the scenic route. hout bay, sea point, town.
At one point Neil was going 35km/hr. Granted, he’s a pretty solid rider and had a tail wind to boot, which all helped in our efforts of getting him there first. Need to improve your speed? http://www.bicycling.co.za/list/speed-workouts
nice one guys.
I am from JHB, but do go down to Cape Town for business a lot. Whenever I have the chance I ride (SAA transport my bike to CT and back for free – lekker!!) on that BEAUTIFUL cycle path from Blaauwberg to Paarden Island and back. You Capetonians are VERY fortunate to have such cycle paths …. In Joh’burg these will be filled with taxis and muggers!
