The Amstel Gold Race is the Netherlands most premier professional cycling race that is held in the southern parts of Limburg, Netherlands. The race is steeped in history after the first event took place back in 1966. Today the Amstel Gold Race is a UCI World Tour event held in high regard by all the pro teams.
The race also serves as the first of the 3 Ardennes classics. La Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege are the other two Ardennes classics. 2015 will be the first time Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung competes in the Amstel Gold Race.
While the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix are more typically suited to your bigger and stronger riders, the Ardennes classics are more for your climbers which should mean the African team could flourish at the Amstel Gold Race.
According to Jay Thomson, “It is a really great invite to get to take part in the Ardennes classic, Amstel Gold Race. It is the true start to the hard climbing classics to the south of Belgium and it is another outstanding monumental race MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung is invited to. It is going to be great to watch one of our climbers or one of us opportunists take our chance at a big race.
“It is special for me that we have a wildcard for the most important race in Holland. It is a dream for me to go to the race with a strong team so I will be proud to go show our MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung colours in my home country, Holland. With riders like Goss, Boasson Hagen, Farrar and some of the African climbers we will have a good chance for a result in the race.” – Michel Cornelisse – Sports Director
