Respect cyclists and pedestrians; that was the underlying theme for the launch of the new cycling route in to Cape Town’s CBD from Milnerton.
A mass ride of a few hundred cyclists, and even long-board skaters, left Woolbridge Island at 7am this morning to create awareness for cyclists and pedestrians on our roads. The group included Cape Town mayor Dan Plato, who rode a tandem with one of the Pedalpower association officials accompanying the group.
Even though the South Easter was pumping, fun was had by all. Even those who punctured along the “Thorny” route didn’t mind as help was always at hand by fellow cyclists.
The path is like a mini road: With two lanes and painted lines making it a pleasure to ride on. I must admit though, there were times when the congestion created by the high volumes of cyclists nearly tempted me to use the red bus lane.
We eventually entered the CBD where we were welcomed by a thoughtful goodie bag complete with breakfast and a nifty water bottle, which I will certainly use in future cycling events.
Thank You City of Cape Town… Now if only another transit system can be launched from the Mitchell’s Plain, Muizenberg area.

the Cycle Path is a definite thumbs up … the launch event this morning cerainly was great. Thanks Kylie and your team!
