Our blogger, Oli Munnik, is super stoked to be back on the bike and on the road to recovery after an Achilles strain. How does a pro train to make sure he is fully recovered for a big race in two weeks time?
This past Tuesday marked seven weeks since I strained my Achilles tendon, and with it, the possibility to begin my ‘on-the-bike’ recovery phase! In addition to my usual sessions at the gunshow, I have so far managed three pain free rides and am confident that I am well on my way to becoming fully mended (read amazingly stoked!). The ankle itself feels slightly stiff but that’s a result of being off the bike for so many weeks. [Ed's note: two stretches to prevent ankle injuries]
With the Wines2Whales starting on the 11th of November, I have resumed training just in time to be able to get round the course with my 360ne Songo.info charity team mate Michael Creedon. Making sure I am fit in time for the race is going to be the perfect motivation to get me through the early days of the recovery process. Ian Rodger, my coach, is currently drawing up a training schedule which will see me ride two days on, one day off, building up to three days on, one day off. The workload will thus increase as the tendon becomes stronger and stronger. For me the slow build up will probably be quite a tough process as I want to be on my bike more and more, not simply riding “wheelchair power” for two hours. But I suppose now is the time to train smart, not hard!
The highlight of the week was the GoPro HD Camera 2012 Launch held at the Radisson Blu Hotel. GoPro is an amazing product and the variety of the HD camera’s applications is really radical. There are some super cool upgrades coming in 2012, namely, an external microphone jack for interviews, a remotely activated start stop function as well as wi-fi capability. The wi-fi function means that the GoPro camera is able to stream LIVE footage to a computer to be viewed by anyone on the net, in real time! The tech savvy okes at the launch were going mental about how kiff this is going to be for the average guy in the street who can now essentially do the job of an entire production company from their own living room!
Now that I’m back on my chariot, I’ll definitely be filming some rides and sharing the adventures on my blog … I can’t wait to be drifting round corners and launching some sick single track again!
That’s about it for me this week…
Keep it pinned!

good luck with the comeback Oli.
