OLI’S BLOG: A Ride With A World Champ

This week Oli dodges the dodgy weather in CT and hitches a ride with a World Champion! All in the life of a pro cyclist, living the dream..

The weather in Cape Town over the past few weeks has been suspect to say the least! Just when we think summer is truly here, another cold front pulls into town with its dreary overcast and cold conditions. This is befit of the UK yes, but certainly not Cape Town. This morning, I got a heads up from my cousin Charlie Keey, that it was pouring again in Claremont and (surprise surprise) in Newlands, so heading out from my new pozzie in Sea Point, which was overcast but still dry, I hit the new cycle lane out to Blouberg and was able to dodge the rain, Stoked. Sea Point 1; Newlands 0!

Fortunately it’s not all doom and gloom though. Wedged in between these cold fronts, are absolutely exquisite days with cloudless, windless and warm conditions. Bang on the money for time in the saddle.

The past Sunday was one of those pearlers and I was able to make the most of it. With no curtains in my room yet, I was abruptly woken at first light (read fail!). Thus, unintentionally, the day started bright and early at 5:55am sharp. After watching some pigeons cruising around (and wishing for my pellet gun) it was time to cruise down to the Vida in Camps Bay to meet Christoph Sauser (still trying to work out what the deal is with all the multi-coloured stripes around his chest and on practically every other part of him and his bike… is this guy famous or something?). While dominating a few cappuccinos and a deadly Lindt chocolate muffin Dylan, Team Specialized’s wrench, and his mate David rode passed but weren’t able to hang around as they were on a schedule (and diet) so couldn’t binge.

Once sufficiently caffeinated, Susi (aka Sauser) and I hit the road (leisurely) to Noordhoek and back and after doing a loop up Kloof Neck it was a race down the Glen back to Camps Bay. The finish line? A road side table with a draft beer ready and waiting, Bam! With Christoph spending the majority of his time in Stellies, it was cool to shoot the breeze with him this side of the boerewors curtain, especially when the weather was so potent and both of us on the same mission. The afternoon eased by and we ended up at Caprice for the evening’s entertainment… I hadn’t been there for a while and suddenly remembered why…!

Looking ahead, this coming Wednesday afternoon (the 9th) is the Songo.info ride on Table Mountain followed by the ‘Dine with the Champions’ fundraising evening at the Reeds Dealership on the foreshore. I was at last year’s event and it was a cool vibe. Get involved. For more info and to register, go to www.songo.info/cpt.

That’s it for this week, here’s to summer arriving sooner rather than later!

Keep it pinned
