On the 8 July locals Luke Bush and Marian Penso became the first two South Africans to complete the world’s longest off-road cycling race, the Tour Divide, cycling a distance of 4418km. They will be sharing their story in a presentation on 28 September.
The Tour Divide criss-crossed the Continental Divide of North America, the hydrological divide which runs along the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The Tour started in the outdoor ski town of Banff Canada, passed through the American states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, and finished in Antelope-Wells, a remote border post on the American-Mexican border. The 4418km route comprised 90 per cent off road trails.
Luke Bush and Marian Penso completed the race in 29 consecutive days of cycling. They covered an average distance of 145km per day. Luke and Marian spent between 10 and 15 hours a day cycling and crossed the Continental Divide 27 times climbing an average of 2000 meters a day. This equated to climbing Mount Everest 7 times.
The Tour Divide is a self-supported race meaning that Luke and Marian had to each carry their own water, food, clothing, tent and other equipment. There was no “back-up” vehicle, medical support, organised accommodation or meals provided.
Put to the test against snow, bears and fires, it was an adventure to endeavour. And they want to share it with you.
