The uBhejane Xtreme Mountain Bike Challenge, one of the tougher one-day MTB rides in South Africa, kicks off this Saturday (10 December) from Cadence Cycling, Hillcrest. Riders can choose from two route options, the 340km Long Horn or 240km Short Horn, and have 16 hours in which to complete the course which starts at 2am and finishes at Hilltop Camp, Hluhluwe.
While there’s no entry fee you are required to cover your own expenses as well as raise a minimum of R5000 to be donated to rhino conservation in the province. Over R170 000 was raised last year for Project Rhino KZN and this year the organisation hopes to beat that amount. All proceeds are used for various rhino protection initiatives such as maintaining the aerial support of the Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing (ZAP-Wing), anti-poaching training and community-based education and awareness.
Land Rover support vehicles will be on hand to provide assistance throughout both the Long and Short Horn events and ensure the group makes camp by daylight. All participants will spend the night at the magnificent Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe Game Reserve where they’ll get an opportunity to listen to the renowned Kingsley Holgate and rub shoulders with celebrities such as Phil Liggett and Sibusiso Vilane.
The uBhejane Xtreme MTB Challenge may be an exceptionally tough event but it supports a fantastic cause. For more information please visit http://ubhejanex.co.za/.
