Biketown makes a stand at HIV expo
31 July 2009

Bicycling’s Biketown Africa showcased their cause at the 5th IAS Conference On HIV Pathogenesis Treatment & Prevention when they exhibited their bike at the stand of one of their partners, biopharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb.

This conference, the world’s largest scientific conference on HIV/AIDS, is held once every two years and host the world’s leading scientists, public health experts and community leaders who come together to discuss HIV research.

Biketown African aims to provide bikes to healthcare workers throughout Africa so that they can transport medical supplies to HIV sufferers in rural regions. Juliet Xavier, Marketing executive for Bicycling magazine, explains the plan behind their presence at the conference, “the goal was to promote awareness of the project, to let the community leaders and the greater public know exactly what we are involved in with the aim of growing the initiative in years to come”.

She also said that their presence at the event was well received with many of the attendees showing interest in the initiative.

This year Biketown plans to donate 600 bikes to health care volunteers while they will also be donating 100 BMX bikes to organizations in the Western Cape in an initiative aimed at uplifting disadvantaged children.

Bicycling South Africa would like to thank their partners Brystol Myers Squibb, Kona Bikes and UTI for their contributions to this cause.
