BikeTown Africa - a big success

02 October 08

Two years in and over 500 bicycles donated to health care workers in Africa. BikeTown Africa has now grown the project and this year will donate 1 000 bicycles to health care workers in Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa. Six builds and handovers will launch BikeTown Africa into a new sphere. Launched as a project designed to document the way a bicycle can change someones life, it's now more appropriately a project that saves people's lives by supplying health care workers with bicycles. It's been documented that a bicycle can allow a health care worker to see twice as many patients per day than when they are forced to walk or take expensive inefficient public transport. The health care workers in Botswana, Namibia and Senegal who have benefited from BikeTown in the past are now seeing more patients and being more productive than ever before. All through the power of a bicycle.

Not to say BikeTown hasn't been a learning experience. Both the bicycles, developed by Kona Bicycle Company, and the program have been ever evolving, adopting best practices including ownership, maintenance, and various design changes which make BikeTown Africa the forefront of mobility in fighting HIV/Aids.

This year over 100 people will be involved in the build and handover of 1 000 bicycles in Southern Africa. The more bicycles and people that get involved the better as the project grows and the impact increases in the fight against HIV/Aids.
