Bhekuzulu and Mpilonhle Project 14 - 17 October The Mpilonhle Project works throughout the Uthukela District in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa (population of roughly 500,000) and has a central office in Ladysmith. Mpume Zwane, the Project Director, oversees the work which focuses on providing support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). The programs throughout the district offer children meals, homework assistance and after school activities (Zulu dance). They also provide life skills training, encouraging children to talk about their past. There is also the Community Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission. This program has outreach workers who go door-to-door in communities, encouraging people to find out their status, get treatment and not pass HIV onto unborn children. The Bhekuzulu Self Sufficient Project does similar work. A professional and eager Fezile, Jabu and Mabusi oversee 24 field buddies and 33 home based care workers who work out of five clinics in this vast area. The home based care workers travel to various communities offering assistance to bedridden patients. The services they offer vary from patient to patient but include bringing food, medicine, bathing patients and offering counseling and support. Talk to us at biketownafrica@gmail.com ![]() |
