Chamois cream is specially formulated to help reduce chafing (because we don’t wear underpants with our cycling shorts). Some riders swear by it, and others prefer not to coat their shorts padding with a goopy cream. Most problems in the crotch area result from uncleanliness, so hygiene is critical whether you use chamois cream or not.
A few rules: Never wear the same chamois twice between washing. When you’re done riding for the day, change out of your shorts as soon as possible. If you do use chamois cream, have the sense to wash your bacteria-coated hands before applying it to the chamois.
