You thought your winter commute was tough? This is what it looks like to ride through a shoveled-out corridor of snow. – By Caitlin Giddings

The snow situation in Boston has reached such drastic proportions this winter that local bike commuters had to actually create their own tunnel from scratch—by shoveling out a passageway through an enormous mound of plowed snow.

Armed with spades and celebratory beers, local guitar technician Ari Goldberger and friends hollowed out a12-metre snow-packed corridor to reopen the bike path connecting Medford, Massachusetts, and Boston. For many commuters, the snow tunnel was an effective solution to a blocked Wellington Greenway path.

After pedestrians and cyclists used the tunnel for two days, the city dropped a couple of giant snow boulders at the entrance without comment, Goldberger says. Yesterday he and his cohorts were able to clear the path so cyclists can still pass through it.
