10 days prior to Comrades, the Unogwaja Team set off on their crazy challenge to commemorate Comrades runner, Phil Masterton-Smith who couldn’t afford the train fare from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg in 1933, so he cycled up instead. John McInroy and his team of 5 set off from the V&A before dawn along with 100 other cyclists doing the first leg with them. One of their supporters captured the send-off.
