SUMMARY:Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run [STATUS TBC]
DESCRIPTION:We wish to announce that in light of the current situation regarding Covid19\, we are working on alternative plans with ROAG regarding the Husqvarna Classic. The health and safety of our staff and our participants is of the utmost importance. Keep up the training and we’ll keep you posted with all developments in this regard. \n\nThe Husqvarna Classic Mid-Illovo MTB Challenge & Trail Run has entrenched itself as a firm favourite on the mountain biking and trail running calendar with this year’s event scheduled to take place on Sunday\, 19 April 2020. The MTB route boasts what some riders have called “the best single track of any single day event”\, traversing a picturesque game reserve – the Gwahumbe Game & Spa. \nWe have been working hard to make some awesome revamps to the existing routes. Over the years\, the 40km MTB Trail had become 46km and some of the return climbs were tough for the riders.  You’ll be glad to know that we got rid of some of the smaller ascents on the return route and have reduced the distance. We have kept most of the single track\, so it will certainly be a more enjoyable ride. The trail runs will have new routes starting at Gwahumbe and dropping down into the valley which should make for some fun\, fast running in spectacular scenery. \nThis year\, E-bikes are welcome to participate in the Husqvarna Classic. E-Bike riders will be required to start in the last batch of each event and will not be timed\, but are welcome to come and enjoy this annual event.

SUMMARY:aQuellé Tour Durban (Road & MTB) [POSTPONED]
DESCRIPTION:The organisers of the aQuellé Tour Durban cycle race have taken the decision to postpone the 2020 edition of the Durban classic to a date later in the year\, following the national government state of disaster announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last night in response to the coronavirus pandemic. \n“We are working with the relevant role players in a bid to locating a suitable weekend in spring that can host the two days of events as planned. We will do all in our power to ensure that the event\, which clearly has a very large following\, can go ahead\, and at the same time to retain the benefit to The Domino Foundation that is the beneficiary of the race. \n\nThe road races will take place on the 26th April 2020\, once again coinciding with the Freedom Day long weekend\, and will include a new 115km elite classic\, and a new 90km race to go with the popular 45km ride on the M4 on full road closure. \nThe cyclocross event has been replaced with two new MTB races to be held on Saturday 25 April\, starting and finishing at the Cornubia Mall. \nAnother new addition to the programme on Saturday 25 April is a race for the athletes from districts each training centre run by the KwaZulu-Natal Cycling Development programme. \nSaturday will also see a new junior race and a kids trike race at Cornubia Mall for the younger riders keen to get in on the action of the weekend of cycling events. \nThe revised program is aimed at offering an expanded choice of rides for cyclists that have supported this popular event in the past. \nNew event director Alec Lenferna says the 115km route is aimed at providing a challenge for the elite men’s field that always supports the Durban classic as well as the fitter cyclists. \nHe added that the route\, designed in close conjunction with the city’s traffic management team\, would take riders into a new section of the city. \n“It is essentially a reverse of the old 100km route\,” he said. “From the race headquarters at Moses Mabhida Stadium it heads north up the M4 past Mdloti and turning at the Watson Highway circle before heading back towards Durban. \n“Then we turn onto Riverside Road and then along North Coast Road and onto Queen Nandi Drive and cross the Mgeni River on the new Super Highway into Pinetown before descending on the M7 and returning to the finish on the South Coast freeway\,” he explained. \nThe new 90km race would create a new option for riders who had comfortably finished the 45km race in the past and are looking for a new challenge. Both the 45km and 90km races will use the popular M4 lap from Moses Mabhida to Mdloti and back. This is also the route that will accommodate the various racing women’s groups. \nThe race remains steadfastly geared towards raising money for the Domino Foundation\, that runs a variety of programmes aimed at supporting\, uplifting and empowering the Amaoti community north of the city. \n“That is what makes this race special\,” said Lenferna. “It is a chance for Durbanites to join cyclists from around the country to enjoy riding the roads under full road closure\, on a long weekend\, and in the reliably good Autumn weather\, the whole time knowing that they are making a massive difference to the lives of the people supported by the Domino Foundation.” \nTo enter the road races\, click here:\nhttp://www.cycleevents.co.za/road-events/aquelle-tour-durban-2020/ \nTo enter the MTB races\, click here:\nhttp://www.cycleevents.co.za/mtb-events/aquelle-tour-durban-mtb-challenge-2020/

SUMMARY:Swartberg100 Gravel Fondo [POSTPONED]
DESCRIPTION:To read the full statement about the postponement\, click here \n\nThe Swartberg100 Gran Fondo starts and ends in Prince Albert\, arguably one of the most attractive Karoo towns in South Africa\, it covers 170 km of which there are 3 gravel sectors covering 79 km. The final climb is over the gravel Swartberg Pass\, a relentless climb of 28 km\, the last 9.8 km being on gravel with gradients of 16% in places. \nThe Swartberg100\, in true South African tradition\, will be one of the toughest Gran Fondo’s in the world. We have created a course that goes back to the days of old when mountain passes were all gravel and brave cyclists climbed them on single speed bikes weighing in at 16 kg. A course that allows us to pit our modern training knowledge and technology against an old foe\, a road surface that isn’t always friendly. \nChoose your weapon carefully for this race\, too much rubber could slow you down\, too little could make the gravel sectors a lot tougher. Watch those gears\, not enough top end and you’ll spin out on the flats\, not enough bottom end and you’ll be walking up those 16% inclines. – Bike choice is key… \nThe Gran Fondo\n– 170 kilometres\, 3000 metres of ascent\, 79 kilometres of gravel in 3 Sectors.\n- The last 2 km to the Swartberg summit is at an average gradient of 12%\n– The summit is at the 150km mark\, from there it’s a nail-biting 20km descent into Prince Albert\n– The start gun goes at 7am (Sunrise)\n– Cut off at the end is at 5pm\n– If you don’t make water-point 3 by 2:10 pm the sweep bus will take you home.\n- Finishing this race is an achievement. \nThe Medio Fondo\nExact Measurements:\n– 53.75km and 389 metres of ascent.\n- A flat fast route an average rider will easily complete in 2.5 hours. \nThe Staffetta\nStaffetta is Italian for “relay race”\, we thought we would keep to the Italian theme\, after all it was the Italians who came up with the idea of a Gran Fondo\, a fun race\, a great challenge for all riders\, professional to amateur to enjoy together\, back in 1970 in the small town of Cesenatico\, home of Marco Pantani.\n\nThe e-Fondo\nSwartberg Pass provides a great challenge for e-bike riders\, spectacular climbing over 65km on a morning outing on your e-bike. You can race it\, but you will need to conserve battery power and plan your tactics well. Or … you can just ride it and enjoy the scenery in a safe environment with medics\, marshalls and water points to help you on your way. \n65km and 1900m of climbing

SUMMARY:PwC Great Zuurberg Trek [POSTPONED]
DESCRIPTION:Organisers of the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain-bike race have announced the postponement of the 2020 race due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. \nA sold-out field was set to take part from May 29 to 31 in the Addo region\, about 70km from Port Elizabeth. \nGZT race owner Trevor Hayter said the organisers and sponsors were sensitive to the issues surrounding the hosting of sporting events while controls were in place to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. \n“We will be monitoring the situation until the end of May before deciding on a new date.” \nHayter said entrants would be contacted directly once any decisions have been made. Updates will also be released to the media and posted to the event’s digital platforms. \n\nThe PwC Great Zuurberg Trek is a boutique mountain bike stage race that explores the heart of the world-renowned Addo region of the Eastern Cape. \nTraversing five of the province’s seven biomes\, the three-day 200km ride epitomises true mountain biking with a unashamedly luxurious twist. This is where the soul finds freedom\, wild elephants roam and the scent of citrus blossoms fills the air. \nBrothers Rob and Trevor Hayter\, whose family have farmed in the Zuurberg Mountains since the 1950s\, realised the diverse terrain offered pure riding bliss and decided to share South Africa’s best kept mountain biking secret. \nAfter establishing 45km of single-track heaven on their farm Hayterdale\, which annually hosts national cross-country racing\, they set about exploring the surrounding area for trail-building opportunities. \nTheir search led them over the southern and northern ridges of the Zuurberg Mountains and into a symbiotic partnership with South African National Parks. \nOn day one\, riders enter the remote northern section of the Addo Elephant National Park\, which is traditionally only accessible on horseback or foot. \nDescending into the Sundays River Valley\, they pass Slagboom Dam and the aptly named Orchard of Oranges as they loop back to Zuurberg Pass and the finish at Zuurberg Mountain Village. \nOne of the standout features of the race is during the queen stage on day two. After cresting the northern  ridge towards the Karoo Koppies section\, they are greeted by panoramic views of the Indian Ocean to the south and\nthe vast expanse of the Karoo to the north. \nOn this day\, sections known as the Three Stepsisters and For Pete’s Sake provide clues as to why this is regarded as the toughest of the three stages. \nDay three is a celebration of all the region has to offer and once the riders have circuited Henri’s Loop at the hotel\, they fly through some world-class single-track\, test their technical skills at Hayterdale and make a final push up the pass to earn their medals as Zuurberg trekkers.

SUMMARY:DBX Mountain Bike Challenge
DESCRIPTION:he DBX2020 mountain bike challenge returns for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday\, 30 May 2020. One of the most anticipated single-day races in the Western Cape\, DBX2020 takes place in Darling with all four routes beginning and ending at Darling Brew. \nEntrants can choose their challenge\, with routes ranging from the scenic 15km ‘Slow Beer’ in and around the quaint town of Darling to the super endurance 80km ‘Bone Crusher’\, which follows cattle trails\, jeep tracks and farm roads to take you through vineyards\, olive orchards and fynbos trails. \nEvent hosts\, Darling Brew\, together with event sponsors Retail Capital\, offer riders and spectators a day to remember with family friendly surroundings at the Brewery\, live music and local produce as well as a chance to taste their wide range of locally brewed craft beer. \nIn operation since 2010\, Darling Brew is one of South Africa’s first well established and award-winning microbreweries\, as well as Africa’s first carbon neutral brewery.  They brew a wide range of premium specialty beers – including traditional lagers\, ales\, oat ales\, pale ales\, IPA’s\, wheat beers and exotic darks – that are loved for their flavour\, quality ingredients and brewing process. \nEach DBX2020 route is named after one of Darling Brew’s quaffable beers. \nDesigned with experienced MTB riders in mind\, the challenging 80km ‘Bone Crusher’ route will have you climbing from the get-go. The first half is full of hills\, with the biggest hill of the day rewarding participants with a spectacular view of Darling and Table Mountain in the distance. A fast and steep descent follows\, with cattle trails and a challenging single track. \nThis year an exciting addition is that the Bone Crusher cyclists will ride through Doornfontein Private Game Farm\, with the chance to spot giraffe and other game species. \nThe classic 50km ‘Long Claw’ route shows riders the breath-taking scenery on the far side of Darling with the 23km loop through Wolwefontein Farm incorporating single track\, steep climbs\, fast descents\, switchback corners with berms and ramp-bridges. The Long Claw riders will be treated to a ride through Doornfontein Private Game Farm and a chance to do some game spotting. \nThe 30km ‘Blood Serpent’ route requires a reasonable amount of fitness. It promises a decent work-out for riders who are not quite ready for the longer routes. Entrants will get to experience all the spectacular views without having to concentrate on single tracks. \nThe popular 15km beginners and family friendly ‘Slow Beer’ route takes riders all around Darling. This short route is still mountain biking so be prepared for a bit of trail riding too.

SUMMARY:JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic & Trail Run [CANCELLED]
DESCRIPTION:Race organizers of the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic have announced the cancellation of this much loved event due to emergency prohibitions for events and gatherings of more than 100 people\, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa\, 15 March 2020.\n\n“We are disappointed to have to cancel this event that brings our communities together each year\, but due to the size of the event and the associated health risks\, the event is not viable\,” said Pieter Oosthuizen.\n\n\n\nEstablished as one of the top events on the Eastern Cape off-road programme\, the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic has become one of the highlights on your MTB calendar. \nSince 2013\, the folks behind the JBay MTB Classic have worked hard to innovate and improve the routes and rider experience. \nThe event\, offers three distances a 25km fun ride\, 50km marathon and the gruelling 85km ultra marathon. The 2018 ultra ran on much the same route as 2017 when it underwent a complete redesign. It did however feature a few new sections of singletrack as well as route designer Arthur Joubert’s trademark wooden bridges. \n2017 winner\, Jason Reed complimented the route with these words\, “It was a great mix of singletrack and jeep track. It was tough\, rocky and technical with a lot of corners\, braking and accelerating. Definitely suited to ‘real’ mountain bikers.” \nBig names in the South African MTB scene such as Yolande de Villiers\, Declan Sidey\, Max Sullivan to name just a few\, have become staples at the JBay MTB Classic\, and if things keep going the way they are\, we’ll see the race grow from strength to strength. \nBut the race wasn’t designed for top riders only. It’s imperative that riders of all fitness and skill levels enjoy the race and that seems to be the norm. Feedback from participants seem overwhelmingly positive. \nThis means that we’re doing our job well – it also means that you should join us at the lineup. \nAll routes traverse the Jbay Wind Farm\, from which the race derives its name. Riders get to ride along roads interspersed with wind turbines that stand 80m tall\, half a kilometre apart. \nThe wind farm covers 3\,700 hectares and boasts 60 monstrous wind turbines\, making it one of the largest wind farms in South Africa. \nOur title sponsor had this to say ……“We have been a part of this event for four years now and are really proud of the association\,” commented Mark Pickering\, Managing Director of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm\, who himself has taken part every year. “The race has gone from strength to strength and it was really encouraging to see a record field in 2018” he concluded. \nFood Stalls\, craft beer\, kids entertainment and a magnificent setting are all on offer for what is a really great day out!!
