SUMMARY:PwC Great Zuurberg Trek [POSTPONED]
DESCRIPTION:Organisers of the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain-bike race have announced the postponement of the 2020 race due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis. \nA sold-out field was set to take part from May 29 to 31 in the Addo region\, about 70km from Port Elizabeth. \nGZT race owner Trevor Hayter said the organisers and sponsors were sensitive to the issues surrounding the hosting of sporting events while controls were in place to manage the Covid-19 pandemic. \n“We will be monitoring the situation until the end of May before deciding on a new date.” \nHayter said entrants would be contacted directly once any decisions have been made. Updates will also be released to the media and posted to the event’s digital platforms. \n\nThe PwC Great Zuurberg Trek is a boutique mountain bike stage race that explores the heart of the world-renowned Addo region of the Eastern Cape. \nTraversing five of the province’s seven biomes\, the three-day 200km ride epitomises true mountain biking with a unashamedly luxurious twist. This is where the soul finds freedom\, wild elephants roam and the scent of citrus blossoms fills the air. \nBrothers Rob and Trevor Hayter\, whose family have farmed in the Zuurberg Mountains since the 1950s\, realised the diverse terrain offered pure riding bliss and decided to share South Africa’s best kept mountain biking secret. \nAfter establishing 45km of single-track heaven on their farm Hayterdale\, which annually hosts national cross-country racing\, they set about exploring the surrounding area for trail-building opportunities. \nTheir search led them over the southern and northern ridges of the Zuurberg Mountains and into a symbiotic partnership with South African National Parks. \nOn day one\, riders enter the remote northern section of the Addo Elephant National Park\, which is traditionally only accessible on horseback or foot. \nDescending into the Sundays River Valley\, they pass Slagboom Dam and the aptly named Orchard of Oranges as they loop back to Zuurberg Pass and the finish at Zuurberg Mountain Village. \nOne of the standout features of the race is during the queen stage on day two. After cresting the northern  ridge towards the Karoo Koppies section\, they are greeted by panoramic views of the Indian Ocean to the south and\nthe vast expanse of the Karoo to the north. \nOn this day\, sections known as the Three Stepsisters and For Pete’s Sake provide clues as to why this is regarded as the toughest of the three stages. \nDay three is a celebration of all the region has to offer and once the riders have circuited Henri’s Loop at the hotel\, they fly through some world-class single-track\, test their technical skills at Hayterdale and make a final push up the pass to earn their medals as Zuurberg trekkers.

SUMMARY:DBX Mountain Bike Challenge
DESCRIPTION:he DBX2020 mountain bike challenge returns for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday\, 30 May 2020. One of the most anticipated single-day races in the Western Cape\, DBX2020 takes place in Darling with all four routes beginning and ending at Darling Brew. \nEntrants can choose their challenge\, with routes ranging from the scenic 15km ‘Slow Beer’ in and around the quaint town of Darling to the super endurance 80km ‘Bone Crusher’\, which follows cattle trails\, jeep tracks and farm roads to take you through vineyards\, olive orchards and fynbos trails. \nEvent hosts\, Darling Brew\, together with event sponsors Retail Capital\, offer riders and spectators a day to remember with family friendly surroundings at the Brewery\, live music and local produce as well as a chance to taste their wide range of locally brewed craft beer. \nIn operation since 2010\, Darling Brew is one of South Africa’s first well established and award-winning microbreweries\, as well as Africa’s first carbon neutral brewery.  They brew a wide range of premium specialty beers – including traditional lagers\, ales\, oat ales\, pale ales\, IPA’s\, wheat beers and exotic darks – that are loved for their flavour\, quality ingredients and brewing process. \nEach DBX2020 route is named after one of Darling Brew’s quaffable beers. \nDesigned with experienced MTB riders in mind\, the challenging 80km ‘Bone Crusher’ route will have you climbing from the get-go. The first half is full of hills\, with the biggest hill of the day rewarding participants with a spectacular view of Darling and Table Mountain in the distance. A fast and steep descent follows\, with cattle trails and a challenging single track. \nThis year an exciting addition is that the Bone Crusher cyclists will ride through Doornfontein Private Game Farm\, with the chance to spot giraffe and other game species. \nThe classic 50km ‘Long Claw’ route shows riders the breath-taking scenery on the far side of Darling with the 23km loop through Wolwefontein Farm incorporating single track\, steep climbs\, fast descents\, switchback corners with berms and ramp-bridges. The Long Claw riders will be treated to a ride through Doornfontein Private Game Farm and a chance to do some game spotting. \nThe 30km ‘Blood Serpent’ route requires a reasonable amount of fitness. It promises a decent work-out for riders who are not quite ready for the longer routes. Entrants will get to experience all the spectacular views without having to concentrate on single tracks. \nThe popular 15km beginners and family friendly ‘Slow Beer’ route takes riders all around Darling. This short route is still mountain biking so be prepared for a bit of trail riding too.

SUMMARY:JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic & Trail Run [CANCELLED]
DESCRIPTION:Race organizers of the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic have announced the cancellation of this much loved event due to emergency prohibitions for events and gatherings of more than 100 people\, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa\, 15 March 2020.\n\n“We are disappointed to have to cancel this event that brings our communities together each year\, but due to the size of the event and the associated health risks\, the event is not viable\,” said Pieter Oosthuizen.\n\n\n\nEstablished as one of the top events on the Eastern Cape off-road programme\, the JBay Wind Farm MTB Classic has become one of the highlights on your MTB calendar. \nSince 2013\, the folks behind the JBay MTB Classic have worked hard to innovate and improve the routes and rider experience. \nThe event\, offers three distances a 25km fun ride\, 50km marathon and the gruelling 85km ultra marathon. The 2018 ultra ran on much the same route as 2017 when it underwent a complete redesign. It did however feature a few new sections of singletrack as well as route designer Arthur Joubert’s trademark wooden bridges. \n2017 winner\, Jason Reed complimented the route with these words\, “It was a great mix of singletrack and jeep track. It was tough\, rocky and technical with a lot of corners\, braking and accelerating. Definitely suited to ‘real’ mountain bikers.” \nBig names in the South African MTB scene such as Yolande de Villiers\, Declan Sidey\, Max Sullivan to name just a few\, have become staples at the JBay MTB Classic\, and if things keep going the way they are\, we’ll see the race grow from strength to strength. \nBut the race wasn’t designed for top riders only. It’s imperative that riders of all fitness and skill levels enjoy the race and that seems to be the norm. Feedback from participants seem overwhelmingly positive. \nThis means that we’re doing our job well – it also means that you should join us at the lineup. \nAll routes traverse the Jbay Wind Farm\, from which the race derives its name. Riders get to ride along roads interspersed with wind turbines that stand 80m tall\, half a kilometre apart. \nThe wind farm covers 3\,700 hectares and boasts 60 monstrous wind turbines\, making it one of the largest wind farms in South Africa. \nOur title sponsor had this to say ……“We have been a part of this event for four years now and are really proud of the association\,” commented Mark Pickering\, Managing Director of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm\, who himself has taken part every year. “The race has gone from strength to strength and it was really encouraging to see a record field in 2018” he concluded. \nFood Stalls\, craft beer\, kids entertainment and a magnificent setting are all on offer for what is a really great day out!!

SUMMARY:Beast of the East
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, 8 August 2020 (originally scheduled for April) for the Beast of the East gravel- and mountain bike race. There are two distances on offer\, the 100km Beast and the 45km Protea ride. \nBeast of the East is part of the Protea Fees at Legends MX. Mountain bikers can look forward to starting off the day with a massive party and festival vibes. The 100-kilometre race will definitely have a sting in the tail but riders will be spoiled with magnificent views of Pretoria and fast-paced mountain biking trails through the Cullinan area. \nThe 45km race is more of a la-dee-da kind of race. If you’re more of a social rider this is definitely the race for you! Both water points will offer something unique to the participants and it is going to be one massive mountain bike celebration from start to finish. \nSpectators can join in on the fun at the Cullinan spectator point or hang out at the festival for Francois van Coke and Dirk van der Westhuizen. The beer and wine garden will also be ready for you. \nRoute info \nThe terrain on both routes can be done on a gravel bike\, but we would suggest adding wider tyres for the sandy sections on the routes. Most of the trails have never been explored and will be an exclusive ride for Beast of the East participants. The views are simply sublime after the Beast climb with panoramic views of Cullinan and Pretoria.\n \nThe Beast | 100km\nThe 100km route will begin on dirt roads and mostly downhill sections towards Rosemary Hill where the first water point awaits. From there\, riders will head straight to the foot of the Beast\, where a brutal 3km climb with 250m elevation gain on serious loose dirt tracks awaits. Riders will be spoiled with panoramic views of the Jacaranda city and an ideal time to snap away on a few profile pictures. Expect rolling hills heading back towards Donkerhoek and keep the legs strong and your body hydrated. The last water point will be at 75km for our version of the Kalahari Oasis.\n\nThe Protea  | 45km\nThe party will start from Legends MX where you will warm up and get ready for the road ahead towards Rosemary Hill. The first “Party Point” AKA “water point” will be at Rosemary Hill where you will be treated with coffee\, tea\, cakes of the day and much more. Once you and the team are warmed up\, you’re heading for the second “Party Point” where we know some might stay till the end.\n\n\nEntry fees\n\nBeast | R799 per person (no under 18) | 07h30\nProtea Ride | R499 per person\n\nAdditional Pricing\nWe have an option available for riders who wish to ride with a team or solo and does not require additional spectator tickets. Please note you will only receive one ticket to the Protea Fees\, any additional tickets needs to be purchased at Protea Fees. \n\nBeast | R699 per person (no under 18) | 07h30\nProtea Ride | R399 per person\n\n\nWhere to enter\n\nEntries are available here: https://www.entryninja.com/events/66242-beast-of-the-east-mtb

SUMMARY:Sun City Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic this year receives an incredible injection with the addition of a 70km marathon ultra-distance event as well as a 10km fun event to complement the existing offerings of 25km and 50km. \nThe move is sparked by an increased demand for ultra-distance mountain bike events and to position the Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic as a dedicated standalone event on the Saturday over the weekend.\nThe new 70km route is flowing and without major technical obstacles. It joins the 25km and 50km trail over the final 20km. The route takes place on provincial gravel roads\, with jeep track and lots of flowing single track and trails thrown into the mix. \nAt the Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic riders are looked after particularly well on the trails while off the bike they will have a choice of vendors where they can buy breakfast or lunch on race day and enjoy all the entertainment activities at Sun City. \nThe Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic is organised and presented with all participants as the main focal point of the event. Participant satisfaction\, well-being and enjoyment of the race are the organisers’ primary and utmost goals. We work tirelessly to deliver a legendary and unforgettable mountain bike experience. \nThe Cycle4CANSA MTB Classic is one of the most beautiful races in South Africa and it’s at a nice time of the year with very little chance of rain and mild temperatures coming out of winter.\nThe existing Saturday route options continue to grow courtesy of continued route development\, and the event is now set for major growth with the addition of a 70km marathon race. \nThe extended single track in the Letsatsing Game Reserve is now coupled with wonderful new trails around both golf courses and this will assist in elevating the status of the MTB Classic to that of a quintessential off-road biking experience. \nThe Letsatsing Game Reserve borders the Pilanesberg National Park but still falls within the boundaries of Sun City. It’s a 700Ha reserve with an abundance of wildlife such as Wildebeest\, Impala\, Sable antelope and Nyala as well as variety of bird life. \nThe animals in the reserve are used to human activity and riders will spot lots of game on their journey. \nThe 70km Cycle4CANSA MTB will encompass all these trails but will include amazing new riding terrain in the first half of the race which has been made available to the organisation by the Royal Bafokeng Nation. \nThe event’s relationship with the Royal Bafokeng Nation has opened vast new riding terrain\, which is varied and interesting and has led to the inclusion of the 70km distance. \nRoute building on the Cycle4CANSA mountain-bike course continues every year and the result is that the trails keep improving. \nNew trail sections inside the stunning Letsateng Game Reserve and to the South of Sun City have been added for the 50km and 70km rides and some more terrain on the Western side of the Sun City complex now also accommodates great trails. \n“Route building and cleaning started some time ago and it’s really come a long way. We look forward to elevating the route experience for our participants\,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer. \nThe 25km\, 50km and 70km route options follow different routes on their first sections\, but then all run onto the tarred roads and access the complex gate at the top of the Lost City Golf Course. \nRacing through the complex on the main artery tarred road is exhilarating before linking up with the Gary Player Golf Course at the back of the Cascades Hotel. \nMountain-bikers who have ridden the event in the past will know the golf course section\, which traverses both the Lost City and Gary Player courses as well as some beautiful riding terrain above the Lost City Course.

SUMMARY:Nissan Trailseeker #2 Buffelsdrift
DESCRIPTION:A mere 15 km north of Pretoria\, close to the Roodeplaat dam\, lies a bushveld haven for mountain bikers. Farm roads\, cattle paths\, dual tracks and strategically designed single track for mountain bikers make this the perfect venue for the third event in the Nissan Trailseeker MTB Series. The terrain is typically rough and rocky amongst the undulating grasslands\, but quickly turns more forgiving as the trails wind alongside the lush Pienaars river and open onto fast and flowy canal paths. The route is known to be flat and fast but does require some technical skills to take on the rocky single track. Wildlife can often be spotted along the routes; just one more reason to love these trails! The Bundu Bash attracts over 3000 mountain bikers who all enjoy winter cycling and bushveld adventures.

SUMMARY:Nissan Trailseeker #3 Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
DESCRIPTION:True mountain bikers know Van Gaalen Cheese Farm and need no introduction. This may sound cheesy\, but we think the trails are grate\, which is the main reason the Nissan Trailseeker MTB Series keeps coming back to this superb venue. As the big cheese of mountain bike parks\, Van Gaalen\, one of the original bike parks in South Africa\, boasts over 110 km of trails in some of the most unique and beautiful nature spots in the Magaliesberg mountain range. The trails evolve constantly\, keeping riders’ interest peeked. The diverse terrain surprises riders at every turn whether they are winding along the river single track\, blasting through reed bed tunnels\, traversing stony koppies\, crossing rivers or just pedalling through the open grassland. Come and experience the working cheese factory and stock up on some authentic Dutch cheese.  This riverside venue truly has much to offer riders and spectators alike.
