SUMMARY:The Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge for Mental Wellness
DESCRIPTION:The Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge for Mental Wellness was put together to raise funds to sustain Ebenezer Psychiatric Home\, a non-profit organization. \nEbenezer Psychiatric Home is a non-profit organization that takes care of functional mentally ill adults who have been diagnosed with and who suffer from Bipolar or Schizophrenia. \nOur home relies on monthly bed subsidies paid by the Department of Health. Unfortunately these are irregular and this leaves the home in a very precarious financial position. \nAlternative ways to raise funds for the home’s survival became vital and so the annual Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge for Mental Wellness was put together. This cycle challenge is in honour of National Bipolar Day (26 May). \nThe secondary purpose of this event is to create awareness and make an effort to remove the stigma attached to mental illness. \nThe history behind the “Bell of Hope” begins in the 16th Century. The treatment of the mentally ill was horrific to say the least and leaves one aghast at the tireless vicious psychological and physical beatings they received. \nIn the 16th Century the mentally ill were victims of witch hunts and were bound in iron chains and shackles. By the end of the 17th Century\, mentally ill patients were seen as an organic physical phenomenon\, no longer involving the soul or morale of the patient. They were viewed as insensitive wild animals resulting in the use of restraints in chains\, as this was seen as being therapeutic and supposed to suppress animal passions. \nThe realization of the inhumane and animalistic treatment only emerged in the 1950’s in the USA\, when they issued a call to all mental institutions across the USA to melt down their shackles and chains that bound the mentally ill for more than a century and recast them into a BELL – the bell is a symbol of hope. \nClick here to enter

SUMMARY:Steeple CX Cup Race Series #1
DESCRIPTION:It’s winter time and the second\, expanded 7-event season of the Steeple CX Cup cyclocross series kicks off this Sunday. Whether it’s a CX\, gravel or MTB bike you own\, this is short course off-road racing at its best. Races last no longer than 30 mins for the social riders and 45 minutes for the racing class. But don’t think it’s easy… it’s fast\, furious and a whole lotta adrenaline-fuelled fun. \nWhat is cyclocross all about? \nSteeple	CX Cup is all about bringing the rich hertitage	of cyclocross to you with an African twist. Cyclocross has	its roots in northern France and Belgium where road riders would race across frozen fields and roads to	keep fit during winter. They often raced	between	towns with only	the church steeple as their guide. Rules were few\, and so	obstacles came into the	mix as riders took the	shortest route to the steeple. \nToday cyclocross or CX is raced all over the world on courses made up of mixed terrains	with obstacles.	Courses	are	2.5 to 3.5km long and races are	timed\, with times being	based on the course difficulty on the day. \nThis exciting form of racing offers a unique format with undulating courses which test bike skills and deliver fitness	gains like nothing else. All this while	having	fun\, racing your mates and challenging for better seeding	and overall series points. \nCyclocross bikes are the most effective	weapons of choice\, but CX does not discriminate	and so all geared bikes	are	allowed.

SUMMARY:Tshwane Diamond Road Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Tshwane Diamond Classic\, presented by Hectic Promotions (a non-profit organisation)\, is a brand-new National Classic road race for Gauteng! \nHectic Promotions annually present the Bestmed Cycle4CANSA and the Tshwane Classic\, in association with Jacaranda FM. Since its incorporation into the Tshwane Metro\, Cullinan represents the perfect location for a mass participation road cycling event with delightfully quiet roads with good road surfaces\, and it’s situated only 30km from the centre of Pretoria. \nThe event starts and finishes at the impressive Baviaanspoort Correctional Facility. The date falls within a wonderful climate time on the Highveld when Fall temperatures are mild and the chances of rain slim\, ensuring that the race optimises the potential participant base. \nThe race will boast a prize fund of R20 000. \nThe road race presents a feature 110km distance while a 50km fun ride distance also forms part of the weekend to make the event as inclusive as possible. \nWe also have a kids’ event and a fun walk inside the correctional facility terrain to complete the picture. \nThe traction of the Tshwane Diamond Classic is locked into the delightful and quiet Sunday morning road conditions around Cullinan as well as the Tshwane Metro’s support and the town’s vicinity to the major cycling catchment area represented by Johannesburg and Pretoria. \nRoute Description: \nSince its incorporation into the Tshwane Metro\, vast sections of the roads in and around Cullinan have been consistently resurfaced. Years ago\, the town hosted many recognised road rides\, but as road surfaces deteriorated it became less and less suited to hosting road races. \nThis has changed over the past two years and our route designer\, David Labuschagne\, has put together a delightful route which is safe\, challenging\, and which ticks all the boxes to make effective route control possible. Labuschagne heads up Pretoria’s largest cycling club\, The Bestmed Bicycle Company\, and his club has committed to coming out in full force on race day. \nThe 110km route presents 1030metres of elevation gain and is mildly undulating\, except for a sharp climb on the outskirts of Cullinan at the Petra Diamond Mine up to the 18km mark\, which is set to stretch the bunches early on. \nThe route starts on Zambezi Drive (R513) towards Cullinan from the Baviaanspoort Correctional and runs from Cullinan towards Rayton and Bronkhorstspruit. \nFrom Bronkhortspruit it loops back to Cullinan anti-clockwise to ensure predominantly left turns and then does a final loop around Cullinan before joining up with Zambezi Drive again to finish in the opposite direction to the start. \nThe 50km route presents 561metres of vertical ascent and cuts out the long-distance loop towards Bronkhorstspruit and back. \nThe split/join point for the two distances is in Cullinan. \nActivities at the Venue: \nA kids’ race (3-4 year-olds and 5-7 year-olds) and 5km fun walk for the entire family is presented in conjunction with the road race at Baviaanspoort. Participants can enter on the morning at the Rugby Stadium Race Office for a R10 donation towards the upkeep of the facility. \nThe kids race and 5km fun walk will start at 08h00. \nIt is a stated aim of the event to incorporate the entire family\, and the kids’ races are always very popular at our events. It is the highlight for many families. Kids take part\, and everyone is a winner with every child receiving a medal and goody bag. \nAmple drinks and eats will be on sale at the venue – the catering is done masterfully by Correctional Services – while ample ablutions and parking are available at the facility’s rugby stadium. Clubs can also erect gazebos on the rugby field from early morning. \nBaviaanspoort Correctional boasts beautifully shaded braai facilities surrounding the dam and riders can bring their “dop en tjop” along to braai on the banks of the dam – entrance to the dam is a donation of R20 towards the upkeep of the facility.

SUMMARY:Mankele Avalanche
DESCRIPTION:The Mankele Avalanche is two days of lekker riding with a bunch of seriously cool guys/girls who totally understand what mountain biking is all about. \nDown\, down & some more downs! Three stages with two runs on each of about 7kms of awesome single track\, bush tunnels\, berms & kickass boardwalks. \nThis is how it works\, and man it works well: \nRiders get shuttled to the start in trucks. There are 3 stages and riders do two runs on each stage\, with the fastest run counting. \nRiders pull away 30 seconds apart (fastest riders go first). Your fastest run of each stage\, gets added together and the dude with the fastest total: is the hero!! \nSaturday you will klap two stages & one stage on Sunday. This is a chilled weekend\, the racing is hot between each other\, but it is a very stress free weekend with everyone trying to achieve the same thing. \nA fast time while still look super cool. A cool pic is sometimes better\, than the overall win!\n\nWhat machine do I need? \nFrom hard tails\, to full on downhill bikes have been used. Dirk L came 3rd on his DH last year (he nearly had a heart attack\, but the legs worked) and two years ago a hard tail was on the podium. \nPerfect bike is a 120-130mm trail bike\, but I seem to love my 29er 100mm dual Scott. Maybe a couple of 650b dudes\, will show us 29ers what’s what??? \nWhat machine must I be? \nNo doubt about it\, you must know the difference between you front & rear brake! It is a lot of single track\, but nothing worse than what is in the Isuzu 3 Towers Stage Race. \nWhat makes these trails awesome is the speed you hit them with\, will determine the risk factor.\nThe big drops have got chicken runs around them\, so come klap it as fast as what you can.\nYou will leave here being more of a machine. Even Steve Hoffmeyer would leave here\, with some street credit! \nYour entry includes: tented accommodation\, race entry\, shuttle & Saturday night supper.

SUMMARY:Tiletoria Trans Elands MTB Marathon
DESCRIPTION:2019 will be the 5th year running of the Trans Elands MTB Marathon “SA’s TOUGHEST 100 miler MTB marathon”. With our title sponsor Tiletoria having come onboard in 2017\, we have rebranded to Tiletoria Trans Elands. \nThe race was founded by Lex Holmes\, who sadly passed away on 31 December 2016. The great turnout of riders for the 2017 & 2018 events is evidence of firstly the influence that Lex has had over many years in mountain biking circles throughout the Eastern Cape and secondly the dedication and commitment of the new organising team to continue with and grow Lex’s legacy. \nThe 160km “Extreme” MTB marathon with 3000m of elevation gain is one of South Africa’s and certainly the Eastern Cape’s toughest one-day mountain biking events. The event is a true test of a rider’s physical and mental capability\, but with adequate preparation it is an achievable challenge. To finish this “bucket list” event within the 12-hour time limit leaves one with a sense of reward and satisfaction which can only be described by a rider who has achieved this feat. The Tiletoria Trans Elands 160km is the ideal tester for regular MTB marathon riders\, perhaps the reason why so many riders have been returning year after year to tackle this event. The 160km event caters for both solo entries and team entries (of two riders per team). \nThe 60km “Lite” MTB marathon race distance with 1000m of climbing was added in 2017 with great success\, and acts as a stepping stone for those who in future years would like to tackle the 160km. The 5-hour time limit allows for riders of varying capability to take part in and complete this 60km event. Riders of the 60km event have adequate time to stop at the well stocked waterpoints and to take in the breath-taking scenery of the Gamtoos River Valley and Kleinrivier area. The 60km event caters for solo entries only. \nThe 30km “Mini” MTB marathon with less than 500m of elevation gain\, gives the whole family the opportunity to explore the beauty of the the Gamtoos River Valley farmlands by MTB. The 30km event caters for solo entries only.

SUMMARY:Yzerfontein Cycle Experience
DESCRIPTION:It’s Back! The Yzerfontein Cycle Experience\, voted as the best new event on Pedal Power Africa’s calendar for 2016 returns to our backyard for the 4th year in Yzerfontein on Sunday\, 9 June 2019. Don’t miss the opportunity to ride in this truly wonderful event. \nAs with the past years\, the cycle event will be complimented by an array of local stalls and entertainers\, bringing a festival – like atmosphere to the town of Yzerfontein. \nFeedback from the race over the past years\, was incredibly positive\, with the competitors enjoying the flat\, fast\, non-technical route. The veteran cyclists enjoyed the fast 78km training ride\, and the less experienced\, and more relaxed bunch took advantage of the 52km route\, both routes being unique in that they are not open to the public\, and run through the beautiful West Coast National Park. \nROUTE DESCRIPTION \nStarting from the main beach parking area in Yzerfontein\, the competitors will wind their way out of the town\, onto the R315\, and will turn off onto the Blombosch road which will take them into the West Coast National Park. The Park Manager\, Pierre Nel\, has generously approved a route which takes the cyclists on private jeep tracks through the splendid nature which the West Coast has to offer. On the return route there is a mixture of tar and jeep track which leads back to the finish line at the main beach\, where competitors will receive a medal\, a Coca Cola\, and a goodie bag from Premier. \nNOTES AND OTHER INFORMATION \nRe-committing their support again is Premier FMCG’s brand Blue Ribbon. Gauteng Based Premier FMCG (Pty) Limited was founded over 195 years ago\, and its operation and distribution facilities run throughout South Africa\, Lesotho\, Swaziland and Mozambique. Premier FMCG also operate a home and personal care business in the United Kingdom. Today Premier markets iconic South African brands such as Snowflake\, Blue Ribbon\, BB Bakeries\, Star\, Mister Bread\, Impala\, Iwisa\, Super Sun\, Nyala\, Invicta\, Manhattan and Super C\, Lil-Lets\, Vulco and Dove Cotton Wool. \nPremier FMCG adds “We are honoured to support such a remarkable initiative. This is not just any race\, we are uplifting the Yzerfontein community\, and proceeds will benefit the International Police Forum\, The Jenna Lowe Trust and The Reach for a Dream Foundation. All three beneficiaries will be available on the day to talk to interested parties about the organisations and the work they do. Our value is growing our people\, customers and brands therefore our partnership with the Yzerfontein Cycle Experience supports our ethos of Growing Together. \nPierre Nel\, the West Coast National Park Manager has opened his arms to all participants with the following statement “West Coast National Park extends a warm welcome to all participants in the Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience Race. We are honoured that the organizers of this event have selected the West Coast National Park as part of this race”. \nThe park is popular among cyclists and currently the Lagoon Challenge Cycle Race\, which will be hosted in November\, is the only other cycle event in the park. This Blue Ribbon event thus adds a new dimension to cycling in the park as it offers riders an alternative route from that of the Lagoon Challenge. We are proud to be associated with Blue Ribbon Yzerfontein Cycle Experience in the organising and hosting of this event. I encourage entrants to enjoy the race and the splendour which West Coast National Park has to offer.” \nThis year the event also offers a 5 km and 10 km fun run. Entrants will get the opportunity to run along the Yzerfontein coastline. There will be medals for all finishers. Come along\, and walk or run the distances and join in the fun. \nREGISTRATION DETAILS \nOnline entries close on Thursday 6 June 2019. \nLate entries and pre-registration: Saturday 8 June at the Yzerfontein Community Hall\, 16h00 – 20h00 \nOn the day registration and late entries: Sunday 9 June at the Yzerfontein Community Hall from 05h30.

SUMMARY:Steeple CX Cup Race Series #2
DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s a CX\, gravel or MTB bike you own\, the Steeple CX Cup cyclocross series is short course off-road racing at its best.

SUMMARY:Katberg Quest
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Katberg Quest coincides with school holidays and a long weekend (16 June – Youth Day) so its the perfect family getaway with some competitive racing in the mix! \nThe backdrop for the Katberg Quest is the picturesque Winterberg mountains and the Kat River Valley\, just outside Fort Beaufort. \nThe area is steeped in history with many of the Cape Frontier Wars / Xhosa Wars taking place in the Kat River Valley throughout the 1800’s. \nWaterfalls\, towering mountain peaks and stunning vistas await riders as they take on the quest to conquer the Kat River Valley. \nThe stages for the Quest Full are between 50km & 60km each with a fair amount of climbing and moderate singletrack. \nThe Quest Lite offers stages of 20km each. The Lite routes exclude the majority of the singletrack and also cut out a lot of the climbing\, making it a reasonably easy ride. This option is ideal for the novice rider or competitive youngsters. \nEbikes are welcome and will have a separate racing category.

SUMMARY:Knysna Cycle Tour MTB
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: The MTB Races are for mountain bikes only. The 30 km race has an e-bike category. \nSEEDING EVENTS: The 80 km and 50 km races are seeding events for the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour! \nOur MTB Events consist of two premier races – the 80 km race for elite riders and the ‘half marathon’ 50 km event for experienced MTB cyclists – and the two family events – the 30 km and 15 km rides for adults and children aged 9-16 years. This year\, three events have been reinvigorated with changed courses and new challenges! The premier events will have more kms in forest areas and more single track. The 80\, 50 and 30 km races will descend via Eastford to the Oakhill School cycle track\, thus avoiding the Simola Hill descent. \nThis year the 30 km event will follow a slightly more family-friendly\, easier route with less climbing. \nThe route for the 15 km race\, which was introduced in 2017\, will remain the same. \nBoth the 30 km and 15 km races will be priced for families\, with only one adult in the group paying full price and additional family members paying just 50% of the entry fee.
