Morath will replace Denmark’s Annika Langvad and support Lüthi’s attempt to become the only female rider to win four titles. Now 32, Morath finished in third place last year with teammate Sally Bigham so she’s no stranger to the race conditions, adverse weather fluctuations and harsh environment of the race.

The former German XCO champion and two-time Olympian, also won the 2015 Swiss Epic with Bigham, subsequently beating Langvad and Lüthi in the process. Morath arrives in South Africa in early February in order to acclimatise to the conditions before racing the Momentum Tankwa Trek together with Ariane as a dress rehearsal for the main event, the Cape Epic.

“The fact that Adelheid is prepared to be here for that long means that she is fully committed to our objective of winning the Cape Epic. We each have our strengths as riders, but the most important thing is for us to learn how we are going to combine our strengths. During the Tankwa Trek and the weeks after that, we will focus on that,” explained Lüthi, the current Swiss marathon champion.
