Crunch Time: 10 Healthy Chips

Chips1 10 crunchy snacks that offer a healthier alternative to the traditional crisp. – by Megan Pentz-Kluyts

There’s more to this couch-potato staple nowadays than wavy cuts and braai seasoning. Thanks to better-for-you ingredients (think popped or freeze-dried – even veggies), plus more protein, dietary fibre, whole grains, and healthy fats, off-the-bike snacking has become a lot less greasy. But with so many snack options, it’s tough to know what’s good and what’s not. So we happily munched our way through a host of new snacks to find out.

Smart Snacking

Read Down Whole grains, vegetables, and other natural foods should be at the top of the ingredient list.
Count Ingredients The fewer, the better – unless all 20 are vegetables.
Sound It Out Ingredients that are hard to pronounce are usually additives, preservatives, and chemicals.
Avoid Trans Fats They raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol.
Control Portions Stick to the serving size, and never snack right out of the packet.[/box]
