Fernando Gaviria had his second major success of the 2018 Tour de France on Tuesday, winning Stage 4 after a breathtaking bunch sprint to the finish.
The 23-year-old Colombian timed his sprint perfectly to overtake Andre Greipel and hold off Peter Sagan, who currently wears the green jersey, in a nail-biting photo finish. Sagan, who won Stage 2, came in second.
Gaviria had previously won the Tour’s opening stage, where he edged out Sagan and pre-race favorite Marcel Kittel in another bunch sprint. The young Quick-Step rider appears to be the sprinter to beat in 2018.
“Everyone in Colombia is watching the Tour de France, and I feel like my nation’s representative,” Gaviria said.
Despite his win, Gaviria did not overtake Stage 3 winner Greg Van Avermaet in the General Classification, which means that the Belgian BMC rider might hold on to his yellow jersey for a few more days.
The race now heads into the hilly terrain of Brittany, where Van Avermaet is expected to continue doing well.
