A Coffee With Namibian Cycling Star Vera Looser

Our northerly neighbour doesn’t lose, on tar or trail. Enter Vera Looser.

AS TOLD TO TIM BRINK |

As with many Namibian sports stars, Vera Looser (not ‘Loser’ – she’s quick to make sure the spelling is spot-on!) has spent much of her racing career on South African soil. Born and bred north of the Orange, she studied in South Africa, where her racing talent developed further. Married to Swiss Olympian Konny Looser, she now calls Switzerland home.

Dominant in Namibian cycling, Vera Looser has won the national road champs 10 times and the TT champs seven times, and has represented at two Commonwealth Games (she finished fourth in the road race in 2022) and two Olympic Games.

Most recently, she placed a fine seventh in the World MTB Marathon Championships in Scotland; but the pinnacle of her growing career so far came at last year’s Absa Cape Epic, which she won with Mauritian rider Kim le Court.

I take my coffee…

Hot. And with lots of milk and foam!

I’d love to go on a ride with

Mathieu van der Poel

The secret to happiness…

…is doing things for yourself, and not for others.

My greatest exhilaration

Winning the Absa Cape Epic.

I fear…

Losing people I love.

A moment of pure clarity for me was

Realising that your happiness lies in your own hands.

Passion…

…is living what you die for.

When I wake up…

…I first need a minute.

I wish

I could be 23 forever.

I rage against

Negative people.
