What’s South Africa’s favourite bicycle type? If you had to choose one, it would probably be the cross-country (XC) mountain bike. It’s fast, fun, versatile, and perfect for local racing – from one-day events to stage races, and even gravel and endurance suffer-fests. 

We tested five of the best, and were blown away by just how capable these modern machines have become. That said, they’re all subtly different, suited to different terrain and riding styles.
