The New Specialized Turbo Levo 4 Sets a New Standard for E-MTBs
With more power, greater range and a more natural ride feel, the Turbo Levo 4 raises the bar for premium e-MTBs.
Eight years and four generations in, the Specialized Levo remains one of the most respected high-performance e-mountain bikes on the market.

Specialized’s approach has always been distinct: rather than rely on off-the-shelf systems from Bosch or Shimano, the brand developed its own integrated motor and software ecosystem. This in-house design gives it tighter control over assist levels, performance and feel, resulting in a more refined and cohesive ride experience.
The fourth-generation Levo represents the most comprehensive overhaul yet, and it delivers a remarkable balance of power, range and ride quality. It’s a superb mountain bike in its own right – smooth, responsive and extremely capable. The motor is powerful but whisper-quiet, with huge range and fast-charging capability.
There are a few models in the range, from the Turbo Levo 4 Alloy (R120 000) to this range-topping S-Works beauty. If the price doesn’t make you choke on your Fast bar, the main reason to consider it is the more powerful version of the new 3.1 motor, which produces 111Nm of peak assist. (The standard unit delivers 101Nm – still a big leap over the previous generation.) Specialized has also abandoned the troublesome belt drive in the motor in favour of an all-metal gear system that promises better durability with no increase in noise.

All models now feature an 840Wh in-frame battery, up from 700Wh, with a 280Wh range extender available. Charging is impressively quick – from empty to 80% in under an hour, or full in roughly two. Riders who want to prioritise agility over range can order a smaller 600Wh battery, which will save around 2kg on the weight of the bike. (You can even remove the main battery and run the bike solely off the range extender, if you need as light a bike as possible for a shorter ride.)
Another cool feature is that the new power system maintains full output until total depletion, thanks to higher-voltage architecture that reduces stress on components. There’s also in-frame storage above the battery, which adds a practical touch.
Specialized’s decision to refine rather than reinvent has paid off: the Levo 4 feels lighter, quieter and more natural to ride, combining cutting-edge e-tech with the handling of a truly exceptional trail bike.
If the S-Works is out of your league (join the club), we can also recommend the Turbo Levo 4 Expert (R200 000). It offers the same carbon frame and battery, with a slightly less torquey motor. Suspension is handled by a 160mm Fox 38 Performance fork and a Fox Float X Performance Elite shock, while shifting comes courtesy of a SRAM GX AXS drivetrain.
