Trek’s Madone was already the smoothest-riding aero road bike around, thanks to its IsoSpeed decoupler seat tube design, which promotes more and easier vertical flex. For the newest version, Trek made the IsoSpeed decoupler adjustable – it can be up to 22 per cent stiffer or up to 17 per cent softer than the previous gen’s non-adjustable IsoSpeed.

A simple damper was added as well, to slow the decoupler’s rebound from bigger impacts. In keeping with current trends, Trek also added a disc-brake version. Wind-tunnel testing says it’s a tiny bit slower than a Madone with rim brakes, but still crazy fast.

Trek Madone SLR 9 Disc only available through Trek’s Project One programme, base price approx R180 000.
