Temperature management in the South African winter is a doddle with a collection of toasty Ciovita technical kit. The Cape Town firm knows a thing or two about keeping your mojo warm through the cold months – how else would its team members be so fit and strong come spring?
For most of the country, cold is the biggest challenge (the Western Cape is far wetter but way less icy), and the key is layering optimally, so you can keep the icy tendrils at bay before the sun rises and slowly shed pocket-sized layers as you warm up.

It all starts with a snug base, then a cascade of breathable technical garments; a cycling top, a wind-cheating jacket and maybe even a full winter outer layer if the prospects of warmth are limited. Thermal tights for the really cold mid-winter rides are a must, but for longer rides that take you into daylight, knee warmers and thermal sleeves will do the trick until it is time to roll them up and pocket them.
Base Layer
Ciovita’s short sleeve base layer is made from the same Polygeine Mesh found in the Aero Race Fit Jerseys. This high tech mesh is treated to be anti-bacterial and odour free, making it the perfect fabric for a base layer. Aside from these practical considerations a moisture wicking treatment means that this base layer draws sweat away from the skin, this helps tremendously when riding in cold conditions as one of the biggest causes of core body temperature dropping is skin surface sweat that has been exposed to cold air.
The Strato base layer is available in men’s and women’s versions, and is also constructed entirely from Polygiene Treated Polyester Mesh. Just without the sleeves, so you can keep your chest warm without restricting movement.
And it’s not just great for cold conditions, when you feel yourself warming up over the course of your ride, you can unzip your jersey and let the cool air flow through the mesh construction giving you absolute control over ventilation and the ability to adapt as your body heats and cools.
Apex Inferno Bib
The Apex Inferno Bibs are full length in the Apex style for a tight skintight fit. Special YKK zippers at the ankles mean that despite the snug fit the bib is still easy to put on and take off. The front panels are Exo-Tex Thermal Lycra which offers enhanced wind chill protection even at maximum stretch, while the back and side panels are constructed from Mnemonic Ultra Stretch Advanced Performance Fabric. This special Lycra features a four-way stretch meaning it offers increased manoeuvrability while keeping its elasticity for longer. The top of the bib is constructed from a treated polyester mesh to allow for better temperature control and reduce sweating.
The Apex Inferno is finished with the latest in high tech trims and details including reflective logos for increased visibility and a dedicated sunglasses hook on the straps. The Apex Inferno Bib Shorts feature the Argon C7 Pad Insert. This Italian-made pad features a free-floating 3mm Perforated Foam layer that adapts to your saddle position, augmented by a 12mm High Density Shock Absorption Foam Layer.
Apex Ember Jacket
The Ember Cycling Jacket features a range of high tech fabrics to both help keep the cold out while still allowing you to perform optimally on the bike. The special fabrics and construction are deigned for warmth, but still allow for flexibility and airflow thanks to special Lycra rib knit found under the arms and in the cuffs.
The jacket also features a range of thermal Lycra fabrics as well as special insets making use of 3D high performance Lycra which allows the fit to be skin tight with out restricting movement as well as improving the durability of the jacket.
