Garmin’s Varia rearview radar adds a layer of protection to your on-road visibility, warning you of vehicles approaching from behind with visual and audio cues. It pairs with your Garmin Edge bike computer (and a number of non-Garmin units) or your compatible smartphone to alert you of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 meters away.
The tail light on the Vaira RTL 515 option also brightens and changes flashing mode as vehicles get closer, warning drivers of your presence. Daylight visibility is more than a kilometre, and the units fit virtually any bicycle, and recharges through USB for up to sixteen hours of continuous use – enough for even the longest adventure.
The Varia is available in two configurations, with identical radar features but differing in battery life, lighting and physical size. The 315 is the larger of the two, but still weighs in at just 70g (mounting hardware is around 35g for both) with a vertical profile that is not going to clip even the staunchest of glutes as you pedal. The newer 315 is sleeker, and dispenses with the tail light (most riders already have excellent daytime lighting, anyway) for a 51g fit-and-forget unit.
