TESTED: Thule’s Cycling-Specific Hydration Pack
Light in weight, heavy in features, the Vital Collection is Thule’s first bike-specific hydration backpack line specifically designed for the mountain bikers.
It’s hard to believe that a quality brand like Thule has only now brought out a mountain bike-specific hydration pack. But then quality takes time.
Loaded with a 1.75L reservoir, the Thule Vital hydration backpack is designed specifically for mountain bikers with many well thought through features to add to the trail experience.
The low and snug fit keeps the centre of gravity down which minimises side-to-side flop and reduces strain on the shoulders and upper back area. I set the pack up pretty low – almost around my hips – which freed up my chest for improved breathing and allowed me to run the hip straps pretty tight to reduce almost all of the excess movement. In this lower position the two jersey style pockets on the hip strap are easily accessible while on the move.

Inside the pack there is a 3L cargo storage capacity with a zippered pocket for valuables, interior loops for secure stowage of a pump and sufficient capacity to pack in a gillet and a full sleeve jacket for those chilly rides – not to mention sufficient space for a baguette if you are heading out onto a longer sojourn.
The pack actually feels super light when secured. The dry weight is 482 grams and the slim chest and hip straps contribute to the minimalist feel. Its certainly comfortable – even when we loaded it to the brim for longer hauls through the trails.
On the trail the hands-free ReTrakt magnetic hose return system is perhaps the standout feature. After having a sip there is no need to reclip the hose into a holder, the magnetic system almost self-secures the hose neatly out of your way and ready for your next sip. The tail light attachment feature sure comes in handy when rolling out for a dawn patrol or night ride mission with your mates.
We have come to expect nothing but premium products from the entire Thule range and this Vital 3L hydration pack never skipped a beat on the trail or in its aesthetics. Available in two colourways, Morrocan (shown) or an almost-black like Obsidian look. A 6L and 8L option is also available.
