Cycle Lab Maluti Double90 [POSTPONED]

In the light of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the ban on gatherings over 100 people enforced by government, the 2020 Cycle Lab Maluti Double 90 powered by Biogen will be postponed until further notice. We are not going to cancel the event but adopt the mindset of waiting until we are able to put the event on. This means that all current entries remain active until a new date can be confirmed.  Due to the cost of the event, no refunds will be given to teams who decide to cancel their entry but we hope that no-one will need to cancel their entry.  If a team cannot make the event on the new date then they have the option of doing a substitution at no cost or, if not able to find a substitute team, unfortunately their entry will be forfeited.  We pledge to give at least 2 months warning as to when a new date will be promulgated.  Right now we have no guidance on a new date as we must wait until the various gathering restrictions have been relaxed. We do understand the frustration for everyone with the pandemic unfolding but we ask for patience as we do our best to find a suitable alternative date, which will depend on availability on calendars, venues etc.  We ensure riders that we are doing our best to honour the event and the entries the best we can. Yours in cycling

The Maluti Double90 is a team time trial over 180 km. The event takes place on Saturday 18 April 2020 and is limited to 120 teams. Teams can enter up to 12 riders per team, with the time of the 6th rider across the finish line being taken as the official team time.

Teams can enter one of three categories:

  • Female
  • Mixed (minimum of 3 riders of the opposite sex in the first 6 finishers)
  • Open (any combination of gender)

Early bird entries open on Tuesday 9 July for a limited time period.  Please click on the ENTER NOW tab on the homepage for more information about the early bird entries.

The start and finish will be at the President Square, Clarens. The route will take teams from Clarens to Bethlehem to follow the R26 before turning right onto the undulating R714 towards Warden and Eenzaamheid. Thereafter it’s a right turn onto the R57 towards Kestell before the last stretch on the R712 which includes a tough hilly section through the Golden Gate national park. The route is generally undulating, with some steep and tough hills in the last 40 km. This is not a ride for beginners.

  • Start time: 06h30
  • Cut-off at the finish line: 16h30

Teams will start with 30 second intervals and have up to 9 hours in which to complete the event. A cut-off will be implemented at the Supporter Zone in Kestell (107 km). Additional cut-offs may also be implemented en route. Your team’s time will ‘keep ticking’ while they refuel at the Supporter Zone and there will be no “time-out” period.

Teams will be seeded prior to the event, with the start times published on the website prior to the event.

It is not an easy ride and teams are encouraged to put in the training miles, taking into consideration the average altitude of roughly 1900m and elevation gain of over 2200m for the event.

In line with all events organised and overseen by the PPA, the Maluti Double90 will fully comply with all relevant local and national legislation.
