Joburg Classic

The Joburg Classic constitutes a brand-new signature mass participation road cycling race for Gauteng and takes place on 29 March 2020.

Proceeds from the event go to the Hectic Promotions charities as well as CANSA .

The venue for the event is the impressive GOG Lifestyle Park just off Malibongwe Drive in Lanseria and the route offers distances over 95km, 45km and 20km.

The venue is perfectly central for riders from both Joburg and Pretoria. It sits on the corner of the first intersection towards Honeydew from the Malibongwe off-ramp off the N14 Krugersdorp Freeway.

Hectic Promotions boasts a proven record of accomplishment in presenting mass participation cycling events which fulfil the requirements of our sponsors and stakeholders.

We are recognised by Cycling South Africa and the cycling public as one of South Africa’s foremost cycling event organisation companies and we boast a history of presenting prestigious events on the national cycling calendar.

We will work tirelessly to implement the successful blueprint of the Tshwane Classic on its counterpart to create a safe cycling environment and consequently vest the Joburg Classic as a signature mass participation event on the South African sporting landscape.

The race will be bolstered in various ways with our logistical experience and it will attract the country’s top professionals. Through our extensive marketing campaign, we hope that the event will attract a significant participation base and grow to in excess of 12 000 riders within three years.

THE DATE

The date of 29 March 2020 falls within a delightful sunny time of the year two weeks following the Cape Town Cycle Tour. This ensures that Gauteng based riders who take part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour can also take part in the Joburg Classic.

DISTANCES TO CATER FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

The allure of the Joburg Classic is locked into the wonderful road conditions on a beautiful route, a brilliant family orientated venue as well as the venue’s vicinity to the major cycling catchment area represented by both Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The race presents a feature 95km distance while 45km and 20km distances are also presented to make the event as inclusive as possible. We also have a kids’ event for pre-school and primary school children to complete the picture.

WONDERFUL SUPPORT FROM JOBURG METRO POLICE AS WELL AS MOGALE CITY

With all local government structures in Tshwane supporting the establishment of the Tshwane Classic and Diamond Classic, we have a keen understanding of how the extent of city servives’ support directly impact on the remarkable success of these events.

Similar support from the Johannesburg Metro and Mogale City to create a safe cycling environment will enable the success of the race.

We look forward to establishing this wonderful bike race, which will add immense value to the Joburg Metro and its residents

ROUTE DESCRIPTION – A SPECTACULAR ROUTE!

The Joburg Classic signature 95km distance offers a well-balanced route with 1100 metres of vertical ascent. It’s challenging and interesting throughout and the climb back to Malibongwe on the Elandsdrift Road presents the major obstacle before the finish.

The route has been designed to offer two shorter distances as well over 45km and 20km and the starting times for these distances have been worked out nicely so that the short distance riders join after the fast groups in the 95km at the joining points.

Riders will be familiar with some sections of the 95km route, which also form part of the Berge en Dale race, but the Joburg Classic doesn’t include the Hillsnacks or Sterkfontein climbs and it cuts out the dangerous Brandvlei Road.

The route goes into the Cradle via Malibongwe and a left turn onto Elandsdrift Road. It turns left into Beyers Naude and almost immediately right into the R374 which runs past the prestigious Avianto Lodge.

At the Rhino and Lion Park Traffic Circle the route takes the first exit and then turns right at the Kromdraai cash store. It links up with the Hekpoort road and does a clockwise loop past Maropeng, returning via the Magaliesberg Road.

Riders get back onto the Hekpoort Road, but just briefly before linking up with Hendrik Potgieter extension (N14) at the Engen garage and then a left turn at Letamo Estate to meet up with the in-bound route at the Kromdraai Cash store.

It then uses the same route on which the race started in the morning to get back to the venue, but in the opposite direction.

The 20km route starts on Malibongwe Drive and turns left towards the Cradle after the Lanseria Airport turn-off, and left again at the traffic circle before the Cradle Restaurant to join the 95km route on the way back at Valverde.

The 45km route follows the same routing as the 20km ride, but turns back at the Rhino and Lion Park Circle where it joins the 95km route on the way back.
