Fierce Competition at the Auto&General Cross Triathlon as Hundreds Of Athletes Take on Steyn City
The Auto&General Cross Triathlon has quickly become one of the hot ticket events in Johannesburg’s sporting calendar. It’s open to all levels of competitors and the huge interest is testament to the anticipation triathletes have for this event.
Since its inception in 2022, the Auto&General Cross Triathlon has grown tremendously, with this year marking the largest event to date, attracting almost 800 enthusiastic racers. It was also the year that saw intensity levels go up a notch as the event also held the added significance, thanks to a collaboration with Triathlon SA, of being the race to decide the 2025 SA Cross Triathlon Champions.
The competition was fiercer than ever! After a challenging swim, cycle and run across the sprawling 2,000-acre estate, Scott Fisher, triumphed in the men’s individual race with a time of 02:10:26 while Nicolette Griffioen claimed victory in the women’s individual race with a time of 02:25:48.
The event kicked off with a swim in the Steyn City lagoon, followed by a bike ride along the estate’s custom designed mountain bike trails, and wrapped up with a scenic run, offering participants breathtaking views of Steyn City’s indigenous parkland. Although the racing at the sharp end is full-on, the incredible surroundings attract families and first timers too. In fact 10% of the field is made up of the Auto&General staff themselves, most of which are doing it for the first time. The atmosphere at the start/finish area is exciting and packed with supporting families and friends of all ages.
“We’re extremely pleased with how the event has evolved over the years,” said Alex Terblanché, CEO of Auto&General Insurance. “This year, it was an honour to host the South African National Championship for Cross Triathlon in 2025, and to see athletes from all over the country competing for the coveted title of SA Cross Triathlon Champion.”
What sets the Auto&General Cross Triathlon apart is that athletes of all levels are able take part, offering options from the full individual challenge to team entries. Alongside the elite individual categories, the event also introduced team divisions, allowing participants to focus on their strengths by choosing to compete in either the swim, bike, or run leg.
“We’re proud to be part of this incredible event,” said Steven Louw, CEO of Steyn City Properties. “Steyn City offers the ideal environment for such a prestigious competition, with its exceptional amenities including the 300m lagoon, 50km MTB track, and 45km floodlit promenade. It’s amazing to see so many athletes embracing the challenge in such a beautiful and safe environment.”
The flexibility of the event’s format, which includes various distances, continues to appeal to both first-time triathletes and seasoned professionals. This year, entrants competed in multiple categories, including the Standard, Sprint, and Super Sprint distances, each with its own unique challenge.
“Once again, Auto&General is proud to support the Cross Triathlon,” concluded Terblanché. “Every year, this event gets bigger and better, and we look forward to seeing even more participants shine in 2026.”
