First Choice Takes the Post-Ride Pain out of Trans Baviaans

What better to chug at the finish of the 230km Trans Baviaans than a scientifically-formulated recovery drink produced locally.

The Trans Baviaans is one of the legendary ultra-endurance races on the South African calendar – 230km of testing off-road riding, with a 24-hour cutoff, from Willowmore to Jeffreys Bay through the notorious Baviaanskloof.  It is touted as the world’s toughest team single mountain bike stage race, and few who have tackled it will forget the physical pounding the backroads of the Eastern Cape can dish out.

The Trans Baviaans is now sponsored by First Choice High Protein Recovery – a scientifically formulated post-ride drink that promises elite and amateur athletes rapid muscle recovery following intense workouts or competition, High Protein Recovery will assist participants in completing the gruelling 24-hour race.

Taking place on 28 August and again on 4 September, the event tests the orientation skills of each rider and ensures teamwork, making it an unforgettable experience. Teams have to check in and out at the checkpoints strategically placed on route so their whereabouts can be traced. The late start (10h00) forces all riders (even the front-runners) to use lights for night time riding. The distance of 230 km from Willowmore to Jeffrey’s Bay, with accumulated climbs of 2 540m, must be completed in 24 hours to qualify for a medal.

Carmelia Miles, from Woodlands Dairy, can’t wait to see the product put to the test: “We’re proud to be associated with the Trans Baviaans, which takes place on our doorstep and traverses through farms between Hankey and Jeffreys Bay. It’s one of the races on many mountain bikers’ wish list and a true test of endurance.”

Miles continues that extensive exercise breaks down muscle protein and the intake of Amino acids, protein or carbohydrates after exercise, contributes to enhanced muscle development and decreased risk of injury.  “Milk contains casein and whey protein, which provide slower digestion and absorption of these proteins. Our High Protein Recovery is scientifically proven to tick all these boxes.”

High Protein Recovery contains more than twice the protein found in normal milk and has been fortified with eight additional B vitamins. It is high in calcium, high in energy and Tartrazine free. The ready to drink (no powders and no mixing is required) uses only high quality ingredients, especially the milk, which is procured locally from predominantly pasture fed cows and is available in three variants including Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Banana Crème.

“We’re a proud supporter of this well organised event and wish to welcome all athletes to the Kouga Area. The influx of people is great for the local economy as it brings customers from other regions to our doorstep. We wish each participant the very best and look forward to seeing them at the two checkpoints, with High Protein Recovery in hand, along the route,” Miles concludes.

First Choice High Protein Recovery is available at www.shopfirstchoice.co.za, selected retailers and Dischem stores nationwide.
