Standard Bank is proud to return as a title sponsor for one of South Africa’s most beloved and longstanding mountain bike stage races, the Standard Bank Berg & Bush. This iconic event is more than just a race; it’s a one-of-a-kind journey through the heart of South Africa’s diverse landscapes that allows you to test your skills and push your limits. The event is set to take place at the end of May and will take shape in the form of the Descent from 31 May to 2 June and the 2-Day Race from 7 to 9 June.

The Descent is a 3-day, 214km journey from the top of the Drakensberg mountains on a single track built by Sollie Prinsloo.

Participants can look forward to a fast-paced, exhilarating journey which consists of the following:

  • Day 1 begins with a descent down Bezuidenhout’s Pass, followed by a ride through the Qwaggashoek Game Ranch. The road then leads to maize and soya bean fields before arriving at the final big climb of the day passing the historic Easby House. The day ends with a final drop down the Tugela River, with a view of the Acadia trees along the way.
  • Day 2 of the descent starts with a climb out of the Tugela valley past the historic Spioenkop Lodge before a long descent through Mount Alice Farm. Riders will enjoy stunning views of the Drakensberg mountains while climbing up via the Shongololo single track. This is followed by a long descent down the Big Red 4×4 track through large herds of game before reaching Mike’s Pass, a short and sharp climb that leads to incredible views of the Tugela River below. The day ends with a descent through Puffadder Pass and Mazambane, before following a single track along the banks of the Tugela River.
  • Day 3 begins at the southern base of the Spioenkop mountain and then ascends the Zig Zigs, following a mellow gradient up and around 13 corners. This is followed by a descent via the Fanagalo single track and a ride along the banks of the Tugela River, which passes through Tugela River Lodge before climbing up and over Brakfontein Hill. Riders then descend into The Kloof and along the dry riverbed passing Blue Cliffs. After climbing out the other side on a section built by Glen Harrison, they will eventually arrive at Spioenkop mountain climb, a 1.5km test of fitness before summiting.

The 2-Day Race is popular with families, groups and all riders seeking fun on the trails.

Both days of the event take place at the Em’seni race village near Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal where local community members run water points along the route and provide treats and catering for participants, to ensure that they have a ride of a lifetime.

Standard Bank is proud to support an event that not only gives people an opportunity to explore our country’s majestic beauty but also fosters community while supporting various charitable and conservation causes.
