The final stage of the Tour de France is iconic: Riders sail into Paris, sprint through crowded streets, and finish triumphantly on the Champs-Élysées. But in 2024, the race is going to look quite different, from start to finish. Yesterday, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport released the plans for the 2024 edition of Le Tour, starting in Florence, Italy, and ending in Nice, France.

The reason for the finish moving to Nice and moving ahead by five days compared to the normal July race schedule is simple: Paris is hosting the 2024 Olympics in July and August, and the city will already be besieged by athletes. While the two races wouldn’t technically overlap, there are only a few days between the Tour’s final stage and the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. In short, there’s no room at the inn.

And with the recent chaos outside of the State de France during the Champions League final last month, it’s no surprise that Paris would rather not be hosting several major sporting events at once.

While Paris has played host to the Tour de France finish since 1903, arguably, a change could be a good thing. And the beachside town of Nice on the French Riviera isn’t such a bad destination for a race to conclude.

La Gazzetta also reported that the race will start in Italy, riding through the Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont regions. This isn’t the first time the race has run through Italy, or the first time it’s begun in a different country—this year, it’s slated to begin in Copenhagen—but it is the first time the race will begin in Italy.

Cycling News reported that the three Italian regions hosting the stage paid roughly ten million Euros to Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO).

The Grand Depart will take place at the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence on June 29, 2024. According to La Gazetta, the first stage will be roughly 180 to 190 kilometres, running from Florence to Rimini. To bring the race back to France, Stage 4 will take riders towards the country, from Pinerelo.

Each stage in Italy is designed to honor an Italian cyclist who achieved greatness in the Tour in past years: “Ottavio Bottecchia, first of all, the first Italian winner of the Tour in 1924: 2024 is his centenary. Florence means Gino Bartali and Gastone Nencini; Cesenatico the Pirate Marco Pantani; Pinerolo Fausto Coppi,” La Gazetta explains.

According to Inside the Games, ASO has declined to comment on the announcement, and the Tour organisers have not released any further information.

Of course, before we get to 2024, we need to get through this year’s race: If you haven’t been paying attention, it begins on July 1, a Friday, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Typically, the Tour starts on a Saturday, but because of the remote start, a Transfer day after the first three stages in Denmark is necessary, so the race was shifted up by a day.
