Alan Hatherly Named South African Sportsman of the Year

Alan Hatherly has been named South African Sportsman of the Year at the 18th annual South African Sport Awards, held at the Sun City Superbowl. The awards celebrated the country’s champions, trailblazers, and unsung heroes across a wide range of sporting codes, under the theme “Celebrating Sporting Excellence.”

Hatherly’s accolade follows a landmark 2024 season in which he won the UCI Elite XCO World Championship title, secured the overall World Cup series, and claimed an Olympic bronze medal in Paris.

Hatherly was chosen ahead of two of South Africa’s most established stars: Springbok forward Pieter-Steph du Toit and sprinter Akani Simbine. Both enjoyed successful seasons in their respective sports, making the recognition of Hatherly’s achievements even more significant for cycling.

While Hatherly has long been a force on the international mountain biking scene, this award underscores how cycling is being recognised alongside the country’s traditional sporting powerhouses. It also reflects the increasing depth and diversity of South African sport as a whole.
