Cooler Temperatures & a New Date: Amashova 2025 Draws Thousands
The Amashova National Classic returned to KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, 20 July, drawing over 3,500 cyclists to its well-loved route from the Nelson Mandela Capture Site to Durban. Now in its 39th year, the event remains one of South Africa’s most enduring road races – and this year marked a notable change, with the race shifting from its traditional October date to a new winter slot in July.
The move appears to have paid off. The cooler weather and alignment with the school holidays made for more favourable conditions, encouraging many past participants to return and drawing new riders to the start line.
The 106 km course remains a major part of the Amashova’s identity. Winding through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the Valley of a Thousand Hills, it offers a blend of scenic beauty and physical challenge that continues to appeal to riders of all levels, from elite competitors to first-time entrants.
“We’re always blown away by the heart and determination shown by our riders”
“The Amashova is more than a race, it’s a celebration of resilience and community,” said Race Director Annie Batchelder. “Every year we’re reminded of the spirit that defines this event.”
As the 2025 edition wrapped up, organisers confirmed that planning for the 40th anniversary race in 2026 is already underway.
