If there’s one race you need to ride this winter, it’s Around the Pot. Held around Swellendam, the route combines fast-rolling dirt roads, postcard-perfect scenery and that unmistakable small-town hospitality. Whether you’re racing or just riding, it’s your chance to experience the Overberg like never before.

Four Distances, One Big Adventure

Now in its 6th edition, the 2025 B-well Around the Pot, presented by SEESA, takes place on 1 & 2 August and offers something for every level of rider:

• 200 Miler (321 km) – the ultimate test of endurance
• 100 Miler (160 km) – the flagship race
• 60 Miler (98 km) – a greatest-hits route that shows off the best of the Overberg
• 25 Miler (40 km) – ideal for first-timers and families, winding through beautiful Bontebok National Park

Winter Riding at Its Best

While much of South Africa embraces dry, dusty trails in winter, the Overberg comes alive with lush landscapes and vibrant canola fields in full bloom. The crisp air and quiet gravel roads create the perfect conditions for long days in the saddle. “The route is breathtaking,” says event founder Rohan Germishuys. “From the golden fields on the eastern side of the Breede River to the peaceful paths through the Renosterveld Reserve, every section has something special. Even as a local, I’m always blown away by how beautiful it is.”

Ride What You’ve Got

There’s no perfect bike for this ride, except the one you have. Gravel bikes are ideal for comfort and speed over the longer routes, but mountain bikes are just as capable (and friendlier on the butt). For the shorter distances, anything goes. Just bring your sense of adventure, and maybe a few mates to share it with.

Make a Weekend of It

With a host of B&Bs, farm stays, great restaurants and laid-back vibe, Swellendam is the perfect base for a winter weekend getaway. Ride hard, relax harder! The only thing better than the gravel is the post-ride beer and banter.
