The Tour de France is known to be a display room for companies to reveal new tech and gear. Whole teams often get access to the newest products from their bike and apparel sponsors, and companies that sponsor high-profile athletes also like to give those individuals custom versions of new gear.

If you’re struggling to understand what type of riders warrant such special treatment, think Peter Sagan, Chris Froome, Roman Bardet, Mark Cavendish, and the like. These riders are well-known and have considerable chances at winning stages, the general classification (GC), or one of several other classifications (and jerseys).

First revealed to most cycling fans through an Instagram post, Mark Cavendish’s custom Nike Superfly 360 shoes have full Flyknit construction and are a tribute to his early admiration for Nike as a soccer fan. The colour scheme and design are inspired by the R9 Mercurial soccer shoes worn by Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo in the 1998 World Cup, according to the Instagram post.

Chris Froome’s Pinarello Dogma F10 X-Light

Rhinos have long been a custom touch on Chris Froome’s bike. They are a nod to the charity United for Wildlife, for which Froome is an ambassador. The colour scheme and number of the rhinos – 1 pink, 1 red, and 4 yellow – are representative of the Giro, the Vuelta, and the Tour, respectively, and how many times Froome has won each race.

Nelson Mandela Day Oakley Aro5 Helmets

Wednesday, July 18, was Nelson Mandela Day. To honour the man and the day, the South African team Dimension Data wore Oakley Aro5 helmets with custom graphics and orange colouring.
