Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) finds himself in the Maglia Rosa after a decisive move up the Blockhaus climb got him the stage win. He attacked in the last 5km and steamed away from the field to finish ahead of Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) and Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) in a dominant yet beautiful display of climbing. Vincenzo Nibali, who looked good for most of the climb, wasn’t able to counter the Colombian’s repeated attacks and eventually finished the stage in 5th position after Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory Racing).

While Quintana maintains an advantage of more than 30 seconds over Tom Dumoulin, the Dutchman will go into Tuesday’s individual time trial from the Sagnatino Stage from Foligno to Montefalco (39.8km) as the virtual wearer of the Maglia Rosa. Dumoulin is expected to put several minutes into Quintana and claim the pink jersey in the process.
