2024 Will Be Greg Minnaar’s Final DH World Champs
Farewell to the GOAT
On 28 August 28, 2024, Greg Minnaar took to social media to confirm that this weekend’s World Championships in Andorra will mark the conclusion of his racing career.
On Saturday he’ll compete in his 28th World Championships, wearing the South African colours for the final time as he chases the coveted rainbow jersey.
Greg Minnaar’s statement from Instagram:
It has been an absolute privilege and honor
“Over the last almost 3 decades, I’ve raced against the best our sport has seen, and they’ve all pushed me to transform myself over and over again. It has been an absolute privilege and honor, and I’m grateful for every person who has been a part of this journey with me.
It was a dream come true to win the World Championship in South Africa, in the city where I was born and raised. 11 years later, the wheel has come full circle, and here in Andorra, in the parish I now live, my heart swells with gratitude and bittersweet emotion as I gear up for my 28th and final World Championship.
I owe a huge thanks to my wife, family, team, friends, and fans. Your support has meant the world to me. The sacrifices you made kept me going when things got tough, and I’m still amazed at what we were able to achieve together… while having a good time!”
Minnaar has won the UCI Downhill World Championship four times – in 2003, 2012, 2013, and 2021. He has finished second four times (2004, 2006, 2009, and 2015) and taken the bronze three times (2001, 2005 and 2010).
We can’t wait to watch the GOAT pull out all the stops one last time in Andorra this weekend. Racing kicks off on Saturday, 31 August at 14:00. SuperSport will be showing a delayed broadcast at 1h30am on Sunday 2 September.
