Candice Lill’s Olympic XCO race on Sunday was a display of perseverance in the face of disaster. Starting strong, Lill navigated the demanding course, demonstrating her skill and preparation.
Lying in 10th place on the second lap, her rear wheel shattered at the bottom of a descent and she had to carry her bike to the tech zone for a replacement. Her medal hopes all but over, she managed a swift wheel change with her team’s support and got back into the race. Though this incident cost her valuable time, Lill’s determination to continue to race was evident.
Lill pushed through the remaining course, maintaining her focus and composure, finishing in an impressive 20th place among the world’s elite riders.
Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (France) took the gold with a sensational solo win in front of an ecstatic home crowd. Hayley Batten (USA) crossed the line second for silver, 2 minuts and 57 seconds later, with Jenny Rissveds (Sweden) rounding out the podium.
Lill’s performance, despite the mechanical setback, highlights her resilience and dedication. She continues to be an inspiration to many, proving that persistence and passion are crucial in overcoming obstacles. No doubt this setback has fueled her goals for the World Championships in Andorra next month. And we are certain we will be seeing her at the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
